    Turn on your DS with a DS game inserted, go to Pictochat, enter the top room then remove the DS card, both screens should change colour.

    * FW1: DS will freeze, when you remove the cart
    * FW2: Grayish Blue
    * FW3: Dark Green
    * FW4: Yellow
    * FW5: Magenta
    * FW6: Blue
    * iQue FW: Dark Green
    * DSLite FW: Purple
    * FlashME (all versions): Dark Green

    This must mean you have a very new DS, that list is a little old now, so it is possible to have purple on the old style DS, just means you have the latest firmware.

    You don't update the firmware, it's just the version firmware you have depends on when your DS was made, it does not effect how the DS works.

    The only reason you would want to do anything to the firmware is if you want to install FlashMe.

    Edit: what firmware you have does effect what you need to run homebrew though. Anything above V3 requires PassMe2 type device, where as firmwares 1,2&3 can use the original PassMe type device.
