First PS3 backup info released

Hopefully march eur release. I was very much into the ps2 backup scene. I had a hard drive with hd advance, and now using swap magic. I wont prolly fill up my hdd tho with ps2 games.

 

I wanted to use an external hdd when the iso loader comes out. I was wondering if anyone knows what I specifically need. I have an external hdd case that hooks up with a usb cable. It only uses IDE drives though. I just want to make sure I don't need any special adaptors or cords etc.

 

You shouldnt. As long as you can hook up the HD up to a computer and the computer reconizes it you should be ready to roll. You probably need to format the HD with NTFS.

I think I read somewhere that playing backups off a HDD results in lesser quality compared to playing it off discs. That's why I didn't try HD Advance for my PS2 and stuck with Swap Magic. Is that true?

 

Format to Fat if you are planning to use it int he future with your PS3 and the "iso loader"... NTFS isn read by PS3

 

Thats technically impossible.
Test Blu-Ray media was able to hold 200Gb's.
The comercially available Blu-ray disks can hold 25-50 Gb's.
Fat32(The newest version) can hold up to 4 GB single files.
Unless the software used to make backups splits the Blu-Ray into many files that is impossible.
In addition the ps3 can be exploited to run backups since the hacking software is the run handling the backups.
Anyway it really does not matter since it takes a small ammount of time to do a quick format.

 

Playing games off HDD doesnt effect game quality at all, it effects loading times of games however. With the PS2 it has only like a 2x DVD drive which has a data transfer rate of about 2.5mbps, compare that to a game running off an HDD with a theoretical speed of over 100mbps, most games dont load at that speed but there is a definite increase in game loading/performance from HDD over DVD. Helps a hell of a lot in games like GTA where data is constantly being read from disc.

That is actually an interesting thing, coz im pretty sure Linux doesnt support NTFS. So what happens with ISO's dumped to the PS3 HDD from BD?

 

huh??? Do you have a playstation 3? I know the information on blue rays already... but what I am saying is, LINUX on the PS3 doesnt support NTFS... I have tried numerous formats.. NTFS isnt reconized, FAT is.... Thats why people have been asking and wondering how, when an ISO loader is released, are we going to play iso's bigger than 4g...

is a bluff, that's the release date for the ps3 in europe.

 

if it makes any sense at all, they will wait till after the PS3 hits europe & then maybe a little longer to exploit the current FW in the new systems. As $ony has already stated, they ditched HW emulation in the European PS2 to save about $30 per system. If consumers don't get angry (let's hope they do!!!) they'll start rolling the SW emulation of PS2 & PS1 systems into the new Jpn/U.S. systems within months.
