That is assuming there will be an iso loader. This is the ps3 not the ps2.

As for linux not supporting NTFS...

NTFS-3G - Full NTFS read / write support for Linux
    Saturday, 15 July 2006

The ntfs-3g driver is an open source, GPL licensed, third generation Linux NTFS driver for 32-bit, little-endian architectures which was implemented by the Linux-NTFS project. It provides full read-write access to NTFS, excluding access to encrypted files, writing compressed files, changing file ownership, access right.

The driver was successfully tested very exhaustively for a longer period of time by many ways and methods, creating and destroying millions of files and directories on newly created images, and on over 40 real, very diverse NTFS images collected over the last four years.

The driver can be downloaded from:

    http://mlf.linux.rulez.org/mlf/ezaz/ntfs-3g-20070714-BETA.tgz

As yellowdog is old linux dressed up as new it is lacking in a lot of new applications, though how having NTFS support will help anybody with playing ps3 games is a mystery to me. To gain any advantage from it you will need a far larger drive than the stock one (I found a howto easily). I haven't been able to find how the ps3 drive is originally formatted from the factory.
As for playing games from the drive.. I'm not interested so I haven't looked, but I think it will be more likely to be from a directory of files, seeing as sony are well aware of the use of image files on the ps2 and have probably taken steps to use disk verification by media location built into the hardware.

I did some research and found that your supose to format the drive with ext3. It supports a single file that is allmost 2 terabytes.
You can do this by using the disk formater in linux.

It's good someone came out with an easy and cheap way to hook any sata/ide hdd external. I hope the ps3 will find it w/out linux and I hope it doesn't have to be reformatted. I have an hdd with so much stuff I want to get off of it.

Has anyone here used the linux on the PS3 with an external HDD as a method of backing up blueray DVD's onto the HDD, and then bringing them to your computer and playing them to your computer display if you don't have a blueray reader/writer on your computer? I'm assuming there is a version of WinDVD/PowerDVD that will read an image on your drive of a blueray DVD, much like you could read a backup of a regular DVD straight from HDD.

I wonder if we will see another release this week for College Hoop 2k7. Things will definitetly start to heat up next week with all the releases coming out, and the EUR launch on the 23rd. New games coming out alone next week on the 20th are Armored Core 4, Oblivion, The Godfather, Virtua Tennis 3, and the Double Agent on the 27th. Something has got to happen then. I can just feel this a week or two away!

The easiest way to play backups would probably find out how to convert the ISO's to the PKG files used in PS3 demos. All you would have to do is find out how PKG files are coded and convert ISO to PKG. However Sony might have seen this coming and limited the size of the PKG files to a certain number and XMB will not start it if it's above that number, but someone could probably make the PKG file appear to be smaller than it actully is. Than you can use the connector I showed you in the last post to connect huge hard drives. (Just a theroy)

Above^^^ That's what I was exactly thinking to. Just get the iso files to that, and they should just come up. IDk if they do have a limit on package file. I remember they said they were going to keep it at 500mb, but there are packages over that like 900mb. I just can't wait to see how it's done!

My biggest concern with this software mod (as is the same with hardware mods for both Nintendo Wii and PS3), is the console's ability to self upgrade so easily. New updates come out for the PS3, and all it takes is one update to undermine a mod chip or a software loader. While it appears that a loader CD is soon to come out, has anyone looked at it with the thought pattern of "How could they attempt to foil this plan", and tried making some other tweaks to the loader CD or other mods to in effect make it more difficult to stop? Or are we going to have to just pray that one day we don't have to write code for a back patcher?

ye the beta is supposed to come out in mid april with the official one hitting the ps3 in the fall. i think htat it'll be pretty cool the first few months, but slowly dwindle down into a small and obscure feature, but thats just my 0.02

With Sony putting Linux on it they would have seen this coming and should have prepared for it.

well this might not be a problem. if you are worried about a firmware upgrade killing our isoloader, you can just stay at a firmware that works with the loader (not using the current one that does not work with it) and use the PS3 firmware check bypass to emulate the current firmware and still get online and the PS3 store. and hopefully new isoloaders will be made for the newer firmwares, though they will not be released as quickly as the firmware upgrades, so you can keep upgrading to those firmwares that still work with the isoloader and use the bypass to still get online and the store. this is just speculation though.

Part of this is a good point. Once this hopefully upcoming iso loader is released, there will be others working on it to improve it. Whenever a new firmware is released there will be hackers constantly working on it to crack it to just be the first. Hackers will never stop. They want to be the first to conquer it, and have their name on it. They get the satisfaction of cracking something that cost a company so much money to create, and then just lose money for their failures. I just can't wait to see the future of this. I got nba street court and it requires 1.50 to play, but I am waiting to see if I can get it working when the loader comes out.

I thought the online service to play was free.. now they are starting to charge for certain games? That's lame.

While I know there will be constant cracks coming out, people have made lots of money off of the cracks. With the PS2, the loader CD with slide card was selling for $35 or more on many sites. If Sony comes out with a new update to stop this, and someone else comes up with a fix, what's to stop that person from saying "Ok, I now have ISOLoader V.2. that will work around Sony's recent update. That will be $35."? With the PS2, it didn't get updates, so that wasn't a problem. The PS3 does however.

With the constant updates/changes to the system via software, the person who gets the ISO loader will need constant updates for the ISO loader to counteract these changes, and people wanting their cut could potentially cause a decline in the use of things like the ISOLoader. At least with the ISOLoader, you can switch CD's. The real difficult part would be things like the Nintendo Wii's solder on chip, where suddenly a patch makes it not work anymore.. now what? De-solder the chip and buy a new one and solder it on?

why do so many people think it will be a disc?

I think the isoloader will be an application launched from the otheros feature or sumthing similiar to that method.

There wouldn't be an easier method to constantly update the executed program.

Simply because the concept behind the ISO loader for the PS2 was that it used a stamped DVD from a game, and then modified the game data slightly, so that the PS2 recognized it as a game disc. Many of the previous system loaders were fairly similiar in design.
