Firware Update Possible?

Okay I have the LG GSA-4167b drive, and it is capable of dual layer burning. I tried burning 360 games but to no avail, so i thought i'd flash my drive with the latest firmware to see if this is the problem. it is version 11 at the moment, but there is a version 13 out. I tried to use the update for that but nothing worked, it says its updating but even when I come back an hour later nothing has happened. It is an external drive, and could that be what is stopping it from updating, if so what can be done about this?
