I've lurked here for a while looking for the "how to's" for DVD ripping and burning and after lots of searching and trying to understand..I think I'm finally getting somewhere.

So far, I've tried to do everything myself following all instructions as I can possibly understand them...it is quite hard for me to understand most of the stuff as I am a total newbie at it and had to rely heavily on guess work and crossing my fingers and hoping.

I've managed to Rip DVD's in the past and play them back on my PC by just clicking on the VOB files and watching them with my ATI player or WMP 9, sometimes films play all the way through and other times I have to click the VOB files after each section has finished.

One thing I didn't know before I came here was the need for ASPI layers to be installed on my system WinXP pro..which was a regular error message when using SMART RIPPER. I DL'd the "force aspi" thing from DOOM9? I think and now don't have that problem.

Last night I DL'd IFOedit, DVD decrypter, DVD SHRINK, DVD STRIPPER, and MENU MODDER, to try and delete unnecessary extras to lower DVD sizes etc.

In DVD Stripper I set the "Global Setup=IFOedit location" then set the "JOB SETUP..Source drive" to D:
I then set the destination folder. The next option was the "backup path" which was checked..and at the bottom was "rip using DVD Decrypter" which was shaded out. Having no idea what I was doing I unchecked the "backup path" which made the option "rip using DVD decrypter" availible..so I then ripped..once finished I pressed "next" which brought me to the next screen. ....so....what next? All the VOB files are in my "MOVIES" folder..I've bought some TDK DVD+r's and now I'm scared to go any further without some advice.

I can guess that all this has been covered somewhere else but believe me, my head is now killing me with all this searching..could I ask someones assistance in either telling me what to do next OR guiding me to a thread which will give me the answers..I don't mind trying to learn on my own but I'm quickly running out of HD space so need to get stuff onto DVD+r asap.

    Thanks in advance...

    Mart :)

PS I can't seem to get the the screenshot to show..even tho its in .jpg

    Hi Jerry..thanks for the reply.

I've done everything you said so far and its worked fine..but now a problem with Nero.

When I open nero, the DVD option is shaded out. I've read the help files in nero and doesn't give a clear explanation on why the DVD option is unavailible.

Is there another tool I can use instead of nero?

I know that DVD decrypter can be set to burn a DVD after using DVD shrink but it won;t allow me to import already ripped files, meaning I have to go through the whole process again. I'm just wondering if theres anyway to avoid that

    thanks

dvd shrink should allow you to import files from the hd (every file that was on the original dvd must be there though). Otherwise, just use dvd shrink to rip it again (it cant take that long), and chose iso disc image and your source. then you will be able to click on burn with dvd decrypter.

ok..no need to reply..I've just realised why I can't find the answer I'm looking for. The reason the DVD option isn't avalible is cos I don't have a DVD-RW. I thought it was when I bought the damn thing but I've just had a closer look at it and its a CDRW/DVD combo, so it only RW's CD's and NOT DVD's DAMMITT!!!!

How dumb can a person get??? PFFFFT!!!!!! I feel soooo stupid!!

it WAS misleading though...well...thats my excuse anyway..

    thanks

Hey mart, Glad you found your problem. We all learn new things every day so don't feel too bad. I've read computer ads that are very mis-leading about the internal hardware. You sometimes need to read them 3-4 times to understand what they mean. Anyway, looks like its time for you to upgrade the old computer. DVD burners prices are getting better on older models as new ones come out. We're here if you need us.

Hi jerry...thanks :) My comp is one I built myself and is pretty hi spec..I was just too dumb to realise that RW applied to the CD and not the DVD..anyway...

I went out and bought a Sony DVD rewriter today and I'm Still having problems, the problem is again with Nero. Its a SONY and it works fine but Nero doesn't seem to read that I've got a DVD RW..the DVD option is shaded out when the Wizard comes up (which I don't use btw), when I go to choose "recorder" the only option in there is a "IMAGE RECORDER....VIRTUAL DEVICE".

I haven't tried the other methods yet..will do that next but as Nero is supposed to be the easiest method I want to try get that fixed..below is the a section of the "help" in Nero which refers to DVD's..its just not clear as to why it doesn't give the option even the a DVD Rewriter is now installed.

    [bold]DVD
Nero provides you with a standard user interface that makes creating any kind of medium child's play. This also means that the tabs which define the properties of the DVD are also largely identical to those of a corresponding CD. The procedure for creating a DVD (ISO) is slightly different, for example because this kind of DVD will not always allow multisessions, so the corresponding tab will not always be available. Options like the choice of format ('Mode 1' and 'Mode 2 / XA') are not available on DVD (ISO)s, so this area is deactivated on the corresponding tab.
    [/bold]

    thanks again

    Mart

Try uninstalling Nero, reboot, then re-install Nero latest version which I think is something like 6316.
make sure windows sees the drive in device manager before the Nero install. Nero can be strange at times and needs a good kick in the back side.
