Foolproof Video Format

    Assuming a person with a new PC never installed a codec - didn't even know what a codec was - and you wanted to email them a video clip, what video format/codec would you use to be pretty darn sure they would be able to click the file name in Outlook Express and be able to view it?

    Exclude WMV.

    Probably mpeg-1 inasmuch as WMP can play it.
    It would probably be better to have them drag the file onto the WMP shortcut (unless WMP has been set as the default player for mpeg-1 files).
    The other sticking point would be the limits on file size attachments for email.

    Uncompressed .avi can be played by WMP as well, I believe. It takes up an insane amount of space, though, so I don't know how well that'd work out for you.

    Following attar's suggestion, I used SuperConverter to convert an FLV clip to MPG with MPEG-1 codec and sent it on to one of those people I referred to and she was able successfully play it. Only problem is the converted file is twice the size of the original, but based on all the procedures I've been trying, twice ain't bad.

    The most efficient was creating AVI and MP3 files from the FLV using FLV Extract, importing them into Movie Maker, and saving the result as a WMV file. The output was virtually the same size as the original and had the same quality. The only problem is that Movie Maker is the most unreliable, unpredictable, and downright user-surly program I've ever used. It seems to often go catatonic for no apparent reason, with no warning, and no error message.

    there's probly better programs that do the same but this one was free and simple to use and hey you'll never get DVD quality videos from FLV files anyway this just makes it so you can watch them easier by the way k-lite mega codec allows you to view FLV files with WMP
