hi i have just bought a DVD-RW disk, and the guy in the shop said i need to format it before i do anything, he asked me what sort of burner i had? its a pioneer A07, he said i could format it with nero but all i can find on nero is erase disk??? i have tryed that and it wont let me do it, but surely that is because there`s nothing on the disk, i guess erase disk is purely to remove data and nothing to do with formatting, i have

On Nero website you will find InCd -- After you've installed it -- and rebooted.

Put a DVD-RW in your burner, right clicking the drive will show a Menu, InCd Format or InCd Erase. !!

[bold]Now why would you tell them that?

Do Not Install Nero InCD.[/bold] InCD is a known problem for making DVD back-ups on many computers. Packet writing software of that type does have it's purposes but if you don't need that type of option and you don't for DVD back-up then don't use it and don't install it. We have had very long threads recently where people were using InCD to format a disc for some unknown reason (A UDF type format of this was not needed), and then they could not erase that disc for using with DVD-Video back-up.

If the disc needs to be formatted then Nero will format it (with the correct ISO type format) before burning, and if the disc has been recorded before and needs to be erased then the regular nero erase disc function will work fine. At least if it hasn't been formatted with InCD.

I have been burning DVD's for over 13 months -- with InCd installed and -- never had any problems whatsoever.

You don't have any problems with it. Some don't and some do. I have used InCD before and I didn't have much trouble with it either. But I don't normally have it installed since it is not needed for making DVD-Video back-up.

The UDF format that InCD uses which for lack of a better desciption makes a DVD RW disc into a type of DVD-RAM disc (Hard Floppy or removable Hard Disc) is not the same as the ISO type format that Nero will automatically do if a disc needs that before DVD-Video burning. And those who do have problems with InCD may have problems getting the disc to format correctly with that UDF format and may also have problems trying to erase a disc with a bad UDF format.

If you have a purpose for using InCD and maybe you do, then maybe it is worth trying but for the majority of people who just want to back-up DVD's it doesn't help and may very well cause problems.
What do you use InCD for? I hope you don't say to format the disc because that is not it's purpose. It is used as a way to have a disc that you can continually add or remove files from. Like a floppy disc or hard drive. That is different than making a DVD back-up.

neon, I am a big fan of Nero ultra 6 and promote it all the time in this forum. However when I installed InCD It created the biggest mess on my PC, I finally had to do a system restore besides uninstall to rid myself of this insidious prog. When doing the Nero updates install only packs 1, 2, & 4.

Jeanc usually gives sound advice but this time I gotta go with veblin, stay away from InCD. If you read the threads you will find almost all that have used it have had problems.

As veblin said Nero will correctly format the disc, you don't have to worry about it. I recommend going to Meritline and buying your discs. They have branded Ritek G04's(a prefered media in this forum) for .52 ea./100 with free shipping and RW's for under a 1.00.
