Hello, I found a Xbox in the garbage yesterday. I plugged it in, fired it up and it powered on fine had the microsoft intro thingy and I could hear the dvd drive spin. When I put a disk (dvd movie) in, I could hear the drive spin up and sounded like it recognized the disk quite quickly. However, the unit did not actually play the disk, just sat on the xbox browser or whatever it's called. So all I have is the unit itself, no controllers, and no games. My question is; is there a way to see how functioning the xbox is without going out and buying controllers and games. I usually think things are in the garbage for a reason, but the other week I found a dvd player which I have been using happily without any problems. Thank you in advance,
sry... don't go dumpster diving much! jk! lol! the dvd drive is most likely ruined... this is probably why the original owner tossed it, but you can by one of those dvd sensor cleaners..you know with the bristles so it cleans the reader, because that could be the problem!
First try cleaning the DVDs laser, then try yhis... http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/409908
But even if you did clean the DVD drive, unless you have a DVD player kit, the screen will say that you don't have one plugged in or the disk is not recognized. Interesting that you don't get a Dirty Disk Error or DVD drive not plugged in error or something like that. You could always sell it on ebay. Be honest about everything and you could probably get $30 for it plus shipping expenses. Less if the seal on the bottom shows the screw hole through it. More if the labels are all intact and you show a picture of it with the menu screen displaying no errors.
Wait Wait Wait You found a DVD player and a xbox in a garbage can. What garbage cans are you lookin' in.....better yet were the heck do you live? And for the most part there is obviosly something wrong the xbox (hence the throwing awayish) and with the xbox 360 all ready out and have some hot titles on the road ahead, there is no sense into putting any money into the broken xbox.
Um...sweet...I'd own both anyday.....o wait I ALREADY DO. and I also have a modded psp, that could also own YOUR modded xbox. BTW: I'd own modded xbox 360 any day.
need to get a game or demo and see if it will boot up. I just got a Xbox a month ago 120 for a refurb 6 gaes a light gun, memcard and pad. a friend gave me his dead one he got another one from a friend that went 360,so I an tryign to fig out whats brken in this dead one what version numbers are and whats what....its nicely built a bit petter than the PS2...god I ahte the PS2 11 revisions and parts only working every 2 or 3 revisions and that dose not include the slim line 0-o
Go to game stop or EB games. They have quite a few games for under $10, some for as low as $4, but they are probably pretty bad games. You can also rent them for $7-8 at Blockbuster or Hollywood video, but at those prices, if all you are trying to do is see if the box and DVD player are good, then get a used game. Hint: get Mechassault, 007 Agent Under Fire or Tom Clancey's Splinter Cell. It may come in handy later on.
I don't call it dumpster diving, I call it window shopping ^_^(me and my brother do it all the time). If everything else works and just the drive doesn't, buy a new one from ebay, they go for $20 dollars(make sure that it is made for xbox and not a pc(pc drives won't work unless they are moded and the console also has to be moded). also like someone else said" where do you live" ? I want to go window shopping in you area any day!!!
I live in Manhattan, o and by the way, the only problem with the Xbox was that is was a bit dusty (and it had a Thompson DVD drive). Tested it with a DVD movie and played just fine. Must have been my lucky day
Darn!!! I live in IL!!! and good news for you, you have a an xbox(make sure that theres no bugs in it(ants, roaches) and that it is not stolen.
