Has anyone heard of this before- just talked to a work colleague of mine and he has a box - wasnt able to tell me what make/model etc as he's an idiot and his brother set it up for him.

Anyway - this box is simply plugged into his wall ariel connection - where he was getting the 4 irish channels and now he is getting everything includinh all the encrypted sky channels. Now remember he has no package subscriotion he pays nothin except his licence fee. He paid 275 for the box.

Is this making sense to anyone.

It depends on where he is living, who the local provider is and what type of signal they are providing.

Also was someone else living there before him that might have had a package?

It can be possible, but it depends on all of the above. It sounds like mmds. Find out it is a box - t or a box - c.
