    Hi.

I recently bought an Astratec Freeview Cablebox from eBay hoping to get any freeview channels available in Dublin but when i scan for channels it finds nothing.

Am i right in saying that using my NTL cable connected to my freeview box won't find any channels and if so, is there any other way i can get freeview through this box? Do i need an aerial?

I know that this box works perfectly well in the UK and didn't think there would be any problems but obviously the Ireland setup in different to the UK setup when it comes to getting freeview.

    Any thoughts greatly appreciated.

do or did you get a freeview card with your box, also i think you need to connect it to a satelite dish.

Its not a FreeSat Box. Its a cablebox like the Starview/Eurovox but it does accept a card. It is supposed to pick up over 40 stations when connected to a wall cable connection but i'm not sure if my NTL connection can pick up Freeview.

Connected to a Cable connection in the UK, it can pick up 40 channels, just a quick scan and it tunes them in but for whatever reason, when i do a scan it picks up nothing. Any ideas why?

I don't think that sort of service is available through NTL.

That box won't work in Dublin, only near the border with aerial and its not a cablebox, only Topup freeview.

Geek22, can you explain what you mean by a "Freeview Top up" So, will it work in Northern Ireland and if so, is it just a case of connecting it to a cable connection up North or does it need to have an roof aerial connected. Sorry, i'm a bit confused as to what this box is actually capable of receiving.

Freeview is a UK only thing i'm afraid. Ireland will be getting it's own DTT system at some point and it isn't compatible in the UK.

    UK System:

    Ireland system (proposed):

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/One_Vision_(DTT)

Note the planned "Basic" pack at €9.99 - Most of those channels are free on satellite or on the current analogue system. Rip off republic lives on through the recession. :(

Will the Astratec Freeview Box work up North. I have a mate living up there and i could send it up to him if he can get some use out of it. I should have read up on the Freeview situation in Ireland before buying the box anyway. Ah well, whats done is done.

It will work up north no problem with analouge aerial and not in Dublin, our new system is different but they did early tests here with that system first but decided to go with mpeg4 instead,[its not a cable box of any sort],hope this helps.

on my LG 6 series TV, using just the cable plugged in, my TV picks up 4 test chans, which are RTE HD and one or two others, thats the differance between TVs up the north, MPEG4 is the format Down here, if you buy a TV up north that advertises built in freeview, you wont be able to pick up the proposed possible changes on mpeg4. it runs on mpeg2. not something they tell ya readily,

Irish DTT has nothing to do with HD.
The 4 irish channels are being broadcast in SD and the video data is compressed with mpeg4.

hi i have a freeview box bought it in the republic thinking it would work but found out a few months ago it doesnt

its a Grundig GUDSTB1000 interactive set top box

if anyone wants it they can have it either by collection if there down the south or pay for postage it just connects to an aerial and you perform a scan is all

No good for dish, just uhf aerial,I have one of them and it works in areas in the south that can get good signal from Brougher mountain in Fermanagh,eg mostly border counties with a few exceptions.
