I am having the most aggravating time trying to produce DVDs from DV tapes I took of some youth hockey games that I want to distribute to parents in DVD form. The software I am using is Pinnacle Studio 8 (OK, I know Pinnacle is now up to version 10 and this is an old version, but I still should be able to produce DVDs nonetheless). To cut to the chase, the problem is that the finished product that I burn using my DVD burner has numerous spots where the video stops and stutters. The troubleshooting area of the Pinnacle program says to shut down all other programs, defrag the hard drive (if necessary), download their latest PCI enhancer, and basically make for a pristine environment for the authoring and burning process to occur, all of which I have done. The DVD burner I have is a Lite-On, model # DVDRW SOHW-8125. The strange thing is that the DVDs I produce work without this problem when I play them back on my PC DVD player but then when I play them back on the DVD player hooked up to my TV, that's when the "stuttering" effect happens. The parents that I produced these DVDs for are complaining of the same problem when playing these DVDs back on theirs as well, and of course I now have to replace theirs with hopefully something that will work. How can I safely transfer the finshed product that I am looking at on my PC to DVD and not have this freezing and stuttering problem when I playback on a regular DVD player? Again, it doesn't occur on my PC playback, but does so on my normal TV DVD player. I am using DVD-Rs, by the way. What a baffling problem. Any ideas? Thanks!
hi not really its the discs used! try burning to RITEK brand with ritek GO5 dye type info also are you compressing alot of gig say 8gig to 4.38? if so try not to! or back off the output size to 4300meg so as not to burn to outer edge of discs
Thanks Rotary. Will the Ritek Discs make that much of a difference? Also, the MPEG file is about 3.4 Gig. Another idea - since I am definitely not an expect on this (yet) coyuld you tell me about write speed? My DVD burner is only 4X. I always thought that the higher speeds simply represented a quicker finish of the project, but can this also have an impact on the quality of the recording?
hi the type of discs used is a MAJOR issue for good quailty burns! write speed is a big issue on good media it can be ok? i say can be! but not definately ok! i burn 4x on good media, with your media try 2x it may work out better??? also use either dvd decrypter or dvdinfo pro or dvd identifier to tell us here the ID code (dye info) from the discs you are useing now please....
Rotary, Here is the info I got about my discs from DVD Identifier. I bought them in bulk from Shop4Tech.com. I see that the have the Ritek discs, but my oh my, the price of these discs! hi TY are good discs? i wonder if its just a bad batch or someone has faked this coding??? try 2x see what happens if it can make things better then you may have fakes?
Rotary, No, I'm afraid the 2x burning produced the same results. Perhaps it's the burn software - I know AfterDawn is big on Nero. I've tried burning in the Pinnacle Studio version 8.12.7.0 that I use for editing, but I have also tried MyDVD as well and had the same problem. Another factor, though, might be the fact that I cannot, for some reason, get my Windows Task Manager to work so that I may close out all other running programs while recording. I close out what I can, but the Task Manager obviously does a more thorough job. Any ideas on all this? Thanks, by the way, for your help - it is greatly appreciated.
hi there ok, lets go abit deeper into this now, as i dont buy TY's as they are slightly more expensive i am not to up on the in's and outs but! they have to be made from a certain place if i recall from this site like TY's made in japan or something to be good? but dont quote me. so things i would do? 1, try a different brand i use ritek GO5 and have done for years so i can recommend these, but i buy from a website that tells you the ID codes so you know what you are buying. or try different burning apps! now 2 excellant free apps (i use them!) are dvd shrink and dvd decrypter install both and set dvd shrink to use dvd decrypters burn engine, its in options i think? but it is there, now load your dvd project files to dvd shrink and click backup it will burn it with dvd decrypter, then see what happens??? 2, what pc specs do you have? fast pc? 3, you say you cant get task manager up to stop prosesses do this, go to RUN command in start menu and type "taskmgr.exe" it should load if there? you running a dell pc? 4, does your drive allow (bitsetting / booktypeing???) it will convert a +R disc to DVD-ROM which is what dvd standalone players use for the format type on originals... only works on +R and NOT! -R
I have the exact same problem. Last night i saw CRASH in my DVD player and it had about 70 freezes of 10 sec. I hope this forum help me out solve this annoying problem.
Thanks Rotary, I will try all of your suggestions and let you know what happens. My highest suspicions now are that there is a program running that is interfering with the burning process. Interesting - I tried running the task manager as you said and amazingly I got an error message saying that the program was already running! By the way, another observation that may lend a clue to what the problem is: all of my projects are playing back just fine on my PC - it's my DVD player that's hooked up to my TV only that has the freezing problems. The parents that I distributed these DVDs to in my original explanation also describe the same problem. How can this be? Why would they play OK on the computer, but not on a DVD player?By the way, here are my computer specs: Computer: Processor: AMD Athlon XP2600+ 1.91 GHz, 1.00 GB of RAM Motherboard: ATI All-in-Wonder Thanks again for all your help - I will try your suggestions and report back!
@Rotary..... you gave great advise! I would definately change to a DVD+R disk and booktype/bitset to DVD-ROM! Your playback problem is due to incompatable disks or the way it was burned from your drive! Many times a disk will run properly on the computer cause it was written by that drive or it can MORE easily read the disk that it wrote it to! But, when used on a standalone DVD player the player has a harder time reading the disk! This is common when the burnt disk is not properly burned. The TYGO3 disks are top of the line disks from Taiyo Yuden..... so we know it's not the disk! Here are a few tips on burning: 1.burn no higher than 4x 2.don't burn more than 4384KB onto the disk... this might be your problem. If the burn takes up too much disk space and runs to the outer edge of the disk it means you crammed too much and the recordable disk can't be read properly! 3.don't put paper labels on your disk for they might cause reading errors in your players! 4.don't multi task while burning or processing a DVD. sometimes shutting down spyware or antivirus programs will help as these might interfier with some burning program. MyDVD is a good program to use for home made movies. It takes longer but it is ok..... try using that program instead of Pinnacle Studio 8...... I also used to have an AMD Athlon 2600 (same set up as you) and I had trouble using Pinnacle! MyDVD did a better job.....but with that computer I burned over 150 DVDs then I bought my new one that is in my signature and joined Afterdawn..... and now my collection has increased!!!!!
My problem is solved! I used DVD Shrink 3.2 . It has a direct connection with Nero and burns nicely.Ah, i burned at 4X. Try it!

To answer your points: 1) 4x is what I was originally burning at. 2) I am only using up a little more than half the capacity of the 4.7 Gig DVD-R disc. 3) No paper labels 4) This may be my problem. If you read the thread I am running imto a situation where I cannot get my Task Manager going. I may have to re-install that from my Windows program. By the way, would switching to DVD+R make that much of a difference from the DVD-R I'm using? If so, how? Thanks for your help!
hi if your drive will bitset / booktype then making a +R to DVD-ROM is like playing original discs as these are dvd-rom standard but saying this i have no problems with -R on any player and i cant say how many players but trust me its lots!!!!!!!!! 50 types? even picky playstation 2 and xbox plays ritek go5 -R good!
Rotary, I have a silly question...how do I see if my drive can bitset/booktype? I do not exactly have a "high end" burner, which is a Lite-On, model # DVDRW SOHW-8125. By the way, another silly question...what precisely is the difference between DVD-R and DVD+R ?? I've always thought it was basically all the same. Sorry, but being a "newbie" I just don't know these things.

Rotary, Well,well,well...guess what I found!! I had a feeling that there was an issue with the Task Manager bottling up my computer and causing unwanted CPU usage to impact by DVD burning. I finally was able to run the Task Manager by typing it in the "search" line. After opening it up, what did I find? - my CPU usage was at 100%!!! H-m-m-m, what was causing such overusage? Well, when I finally was able to open up the Task Manager I clicked on the process panel and discovered that a program called "winupdate.exe" was taking up 99% of my CPU usage!! I spoke to a tech expert at work and sure enough, confirmed that this program is a worm! I will remove it by installing the proper Micrsoft anti-spyware. Of course, after doing this I would imagine that the DVD burning issues should be solved, but we'll see. Let this be a lesson for anyone viewing this string to make sure to check your CPU process panel in Task Manager to see what programs may be impacting your DVD making projects! Wow!
