Game enhancers and “cheating”:A rant.

I miss cheats and game enhancers and secret cheat menus. I miss the fun of making a slow, annoying or bad game fun to play or just take a fun game and make it into utter chaos. To me game enhancers from the game genie to the game shark to the action reply and the code breaker they were not cheating but modification of the mechanics to get more out of a fun or dreary game . It seems to me we’ve lost so much over the last 10 years when Microsoft’s LIVE came into being. Game enhancers were barred from the platform due to achievements and mucking with the scoring and multi player system.
Now around a decade later we have more mediocre games than ever because too many publishers are seeking a larger demographic by watering down mechanics and keeping things overly simple, generic and mundane.

We need game enhancers back to liven up bland and generic games but we need a system that works with not against the systems, protections and online schemes.
First off you need an enhancer system that via PSN/LIVE,ect changes game code ala code breaker and such style now this may sound radical in this day in age and would be if it was in the form of a unsecured boot application. This system does not use such a thing the first level of protection of the code/environment is the network protection schemes itself, IE whatever LIVE/PSN,ect use for general protections and cross checking of protection.

Now that the enhancer system has a foundation for its game connection let’s move on to how it should talk to the game, via the hard disc, temp memory, ram, ect should be where it can boot and inject code during a process that’s protected under its own possibly real time DRM to ensure that nothing hinky is going on. Developers can get in on this system and make it easier to que up enhancement lists via this system(they just add various ways to adjust a spectrum of machanics,ect that is already coded into the game no need to reverse engineer code into the game) so the game code does not have to be forcibly adjusted.

Now the game boots up in the special mode and has the requested enhancements applied but where do the enhancements come from and how will this effect achievements, scoring and other online stat gathering?

For achievements and online stat gathering you can have a few options either “unpluged” where you are online but no scores, achievements, ect are kept for multiplayer or single player modes. Or you can have a bizarro world style “LoOozers” leader board where the lowest “active” scores in single and multiplayer modes rank you the highest, achievements are reordered here as well and leader boards list enhancements used and other statistical information.

Multiplayer could handle “enhancement” in 3 ways one the server lists available enhancements and each player can pick and chose. Two the enhancements the sever sets cannot be turned off they are global. And three the one I like more everyone on the server picks the top 10 or 20 enhancements and picks what they want to use, the more enhancements you have on it, it adds to your scoring(thus lowers your rank in the “LoOozers” leader board). Or you can always simply block multiplayer from use of the enhancement/enhancer system but I think there is untapped profit to be made if done correctly.

Speaking of profit there are a few ways to make money off this system one is a simple subscription setup at 4$ or so a month. Another is sell enhancements in DLC game packs that support a bunch of like games for 1-5$, single game enhancements for 1-5$ via DLC, Lifetime subscription for 150 for all games, also you can donate up to 50$ per game to have suggested enhancements implemented(which can be developed into donating for game implementations for currently supported games by X or Y devolves), when you have donated 50$ all cheats for the game are free all of this is tracked on the account/store so it’s all handy and easy to track and find.

Profit sharing could be 30% to the publisher,30% to the online system provider(LIVE/PSN,ect), and 40% to the service itself if it’s a 3rd wheel and just a branch of X console maker, hopefully however you split it between 2 or 3 million users per system that would even try it there is money to be had, the more people partake of it the more they will use it and more profit or security schemes can be developed beyond this point.

I would not be surprised to see them start selling cheat unlocks...hustle kings already does this; they sell special pool chalk that is essentially cheating...$0.99 per chalk, and the chalk only lasts 99 uses (actually, it is broken, so it only lasts about 20 uses before it says all 99 are used up). You can even use the cheat chalk online (but one option while setting up a game is to disable is).

Most games have cheat codes...they usually don't work online, and they prevent you from getting trophies/achievements...but they are already there. I am happy that there is no "game genie" for the PS3...online gaming on a PC is terrible; everyone is immortal, and every game is like playing PS home.

i remember playing with the action replay on the snes.streetfighter 2 characters upside down was fun.if your playing games online or in competitions cheating is wrong.should rely on skill alone.If you can find a way to make the game more fun and your not having any serious games by all means cheat.

Yeah...most PC games have trainers that do ARMAX-style mods to the games. It can be a lot of fun having a car that can jump clear over a city...but it is downright infuriating when you are playing online and the guy you have to kill is just standing in the middle of the road soaking up rockets without getting hurt...this ruined multi-theft-auto for me, as well as several other games. At this point, I have not played a PC game in so long that my video card is too outdated to play most PC games, even at low settings.

PC games are a right fun to play, only if the servers have active moderators. its been proven time and time again Self analyzing anti-cheat software doesn't work. what it does do is increase ping times, map off memory blocks, and introduce input/output lag.

Well its less a code based system and more a flag(its already there to be turned on or off) based system that is already built in.
