    Pretty vague description.

Can't load Windows (already installed) or can't install Windows?

What version of windows and what error message?

    1. Does the BIOS recognize the drive at the correct size?

    2. If the drive is new it shouldn't have a partition on it and the installation disk should run the partition/format routine.

    Are you getting that far?

Loading from the CD is a whole different problem.

If you can't boot from the CD it's most likely not a HDD problem. I have booted the installation on systems with NO HDD and it will still boot but when it comes to install it will tell you that it couldn't find a HDD to install on.

You need to instruct the PC to boot from the optical drive. You do this either by going into the BIOS and changing the boot order or on some PCs, you can override the boot drive at startup.

On IBM Thinkpads you do this by pressing F12 at startup when prompted.

I do not know what key that may be on gateway. I did a quick search and there may not be one.

go into the bios to change the boot sequence so that the rom drive is 1st & the hd is 2nd. f8 might give you the option to say which drive to boot from.
