    Hi

Just wanted to ask about the 7800gs

I have ordered the XFX 7800gs, however when i ordered it i didnt realise they were offering 2 versions of this card.

One clocks at 375/1200 and the other at 440/1300.

Will it make any differnce to me that i have ordered the slower core speed card, or will both cards respond exactly the same after i have clocked them with coolbits 2. or tweak them with rivatuner once it supports the the AGP 7800's.

Or is it just a way for xfx to try and make some more money from people who might be unaware they can overclock the cards.

Let me know what you think

i doubt very much you will ever get your lower card to that spec without severly crippling the card.

    See the thing is:

a 7800 now i cant really think of a game that wouldnt run on full detail everything set to its highest and wouldnt run perfectly. Maybe Doom 3 on Ultra Highest Rex 16x Anti Alaising etc.. would set fire to this theory but i don't know.

You can overclock that card but it would be foolish to do so until you find a reason or a situation where you MUST overclock it to get a or several games to run/perform faster. At the moment should be fine...

XFX do this generally to charge more money for a GTX or Turbo whatever version its just for people with fatter wallets wanting to look more flashy.

Id say it was possible o get your card to run at 400/1250 that to me i think would be safe with a little extra cooling. As for 440 i doubt youll get the core clock to that without making things worse. The memory is even less likely to be honest id be surpised if you could get it above 1250.

Now to test youll need to use a becnhmark but ive had instances when overclocking has actullly descresed performance in-game but has gotten more points in 3dmark so its your call im afraid.

Thanks sorry rambling but i wanted to explain in good detail - overclocking can be an expensive and short lived hobby on graphics cards so be careful

So your saying there are fundemntal differences in the hardware and/or design of the two cards and that the one with the higher clocking frequencies isnt just set to run faster by default.

It would seem to me that the cores these cards are based on are designed by nvidia and have the same architecture....

As far as i can tell the both seem to have the same cooling systems too...

    http://www.xfxforce.com/web/product...esId=144767&productId=144813#PV-T70K-UAD(7,3)

So i guess what im asking is what is the difference between the two?

Youve just answered your own question basically the cock rates are higher and possibly the voltages are a little higher too. Also the Bios on the card will be slightly different if they both have the same cooling system which seems unlikely but they might. Although one might have more heatsink or something. But even so software overclocking the card will not get the same results youll just push the card too much i have overclocked a lot of cards and ive never been able to get a massive increase not on a card like that.

    LoL :^) (on Brokeback Mountain?)
But seriously, the memory will be different - the higher-clocked board will use different chips with lower latencies, supporting that speed.
