I've tried to do some reading and looking around, but the issue of Gamecube modifications....seems to be one there no two people agree on the same thing. I've read of two modchips that exist for the Gamecube, the Viper and the Qoob. From what I've read, these chips seem designed for running home-brew applications and code. However, I've also seen that you can get a case-mod for a Gamecube that will allow it to fit and play full size DVDs.

My first question, if I can get a straightforward answer, with the modchip and the case, is it possible to make backups of Gamecube games that you own and play them directly in the Gamecube? I've read that there is a way to "rip" Gamecube games, but that it requires the game to be streamed over a LAN to the Gamecube via its network adapter. My guess is that on some games, especially those heavy on FMV scenes....this probably doesn't work the best.

I already own an X-Box, and several games for it that I've successfully backed up. I realize that DVDs are extremely durable. However, I also realize how easily they can be made un playable by a 5 yr. old using them as a frisbee across a room. Overall, I like the X-box. Although, like a lot of people, I'm let down that Microsoft never made any real effort, to get a good line-up of exclusive X-Box titles. Other than some games, like Halo(which isn't my style of game anyways), it seems that almost any other X-Box game can be gotten for the Gamecube or the PS2.

I've avoided the PS2 since the larger models that actually offered some more modification options, are no longer sold. I've also read of many people, even those without modchips, having their laser burn out easily on the slim PS2. I also despise have to swap discs over and over just to play my game. After all, with the slide card, you risk damaging the disc tray, and with the flip-top case, you risk things getting into the case and damaging the laser....

There are many games that I've played on the Gamecube that I really like, that don't seem to be available on other systems. To the best of my knowledge there is no way to get a Gamecube game to play on an X-Box or a PS2, even with a mod-chip.

I'd really like to find a pretty solid way of making workable backups of Gamecube games, before I make the investment in getting a lot of games.

ok i'm gonna answer your questions:

Viper GC and Qoob are the most popular chips for the GC

Yes you can backup games for the GC, you need to rip it to your pc using the network adaptor then once you have it on your PC as an ISO it can be burnt to a dvd+-r

you also have the choice of streaming it to the gamecube if you want, I only do that before burning a game to test if it ripped right

Yes, PS2 lasers dont last forever, but they're simple fixes, there are write-ups on the net on fixing the Disc read errors

A gamecube dvd is read opposite to a normal dvd, xbox or ps2 dvd
normal is read from the inside out, gamecube is read from the outside in and needs to be exactly 1.35 GB (1,459,978,240 bytes)otherwise the gamecube will refuse to read it
