General Unlocking questions - pretty noob

1) I know that I could use any service with an unlocked phone but I dont understand how it works. I have a Nokia 6102i AT&T phone, my carrier is Cingular/AT&T. After its unlocked how do I take advantage of the universal service?

2) What about text messageing and accessing the internet with an unlocked phone? Any benefits there?

3) My friend has AT&T too, but is switching to T-mobile. Her new phone will be locked cause shes getting it from T-mobile. If my phone is unlocked will it still be a free mobile to mobile call for me?
