Geohot, the guy behind iPhone jailbreaking, just publicly stated that he has hacked the playstation 3. I know the community we'll be telling themselves, "Yeah right! We'll believe it when we see it" but this guy has always been true to his word. Still needs to reverse engineer the software but I truly think this is it guys. Read the blog and let me know what you think. Oh happy day!

The guy has talent, no one can deny that.

If he says he has done it, I believe him. As you say, he has always been true to his word, and his work on the iPhone completely changed that community.

However, I've been following his work closely, and it seems the hack requires some pretty extensive hardware modifications (pic), so I wouldn't suggest anyone gets their hopes up for anything workable just yet.

    Congratulations to him, good work.

He did try his best to create something that can't be patched with a firmware update. Hopefully we aren't looking at something that will require too much physical modification.

I think that, for a while at least, is very wishfull thinking. The pic I linked to shows only one of the pics he posted showing how he had dismantled the PS3.

But, the first iPhone hack was also a complicated hardware mod, and look where that's at today...One click and your device is completely unlocked and your free to do whatever you want with it, and thats all down to GeoHot.

I knew he could do it. Yes, I too hope it doesn't require too much hardware modification.

All the stuff he attached might just be for reading the system ROM and such...once it is all sorted, the mod could be as easy as a firmware flash.

Also, if you look closely, it seems he only has 1 extra board, a power supply, and paralell to USB adapter...Look a bit closer, and you see that it all seems to be connected with just two wires...a yellow ground and a white signal. He even says that it connects to a paralell port on his blog...so it can't be that advanced.

I don't trust anyone, but it is about time this platform was broken...and this guy seems to be the most likely one to do it at the moment.

There was another pic he posted which showed alot more modification, cant find the link though, i think it was on his twitter.

But like I say, the iPhone started with a pretty extensive mod to unlock mthe carrier, but now it just a case of 1 click and you're done. Theres also the fact that he managed to make the iPhone jailbreak invisable to Apple, even when connecting to the app store, iTunes etc. That's gotta look good for people who don't want to be detected by Sony, although the PS3 is obviously a lot more advanced than the iPhone.

Looking good, just not sure how this will help as copying games into a Blu-Ray disc would cost a lot of time and money.

And I just hope that when the hack gets released, the PS3 doesn't end up like the PSP.

Hopefully he wont release a way which can't be detected by Sony...that way at least people will have to buy games if they want to play online.

I wonder how long he'll take to release more info. Since this news has shown up on Kotaku and several other sites, i'm growig a bit impatient.

Anyway, why are some people so worried about this. Even if the system is indeed hacked i doubt that Sony will lose money. Infact, i'd argue that it will help increase the consoles popularity.

I'm afraid that it won't be as simple as that.

Even if the hack did enable the possibility of playing pirated PS3 games, it would take too long to download 1st party titles.

Enough seeders and anything can be downloaded over a 2 day period at worst...at least with a half decent high speed connection. And hopefully we'll see a way to play the games from an .iso image on an external hard drive - that's what I'm hearing and it sure would save a lot of money on discs and blu ray burners if you don't already have one. Can't wait to see more...

Progress is made and the pirates immediately pounce. Hahahah.

For that reason alone, I would find it incredibly amusing if all the guy does is list everything he used and how much it all cost.
