If he indeed hacked PS3 (after he's last post i really doubt) and he indeed concerned about piracy, he could easily contact sony and point them their security holes, but he wont do it i guess.

Whatevs, the creator of this thread did not suggest that all statements to this thread had to be positive about the hack. FYI, I would like a hack to allow me to increase the WIFI signal output, install OS on a Slim and I would like to be able to save copy protected game save data to a flash drive. When I upgraded my HDD, I lost some game saves.
Thanks to the few new posters on the PS3 forum for proving a point for me.
I’ll leave this thread and not poop on your thread anymore. Later

I'd like a hack which allows users to download custom-made arcade games from the internet then playable on the PS3.

I have no interest in pirated games.
It was different for the PSP, the games just didn't deserve the same amount of money that stores were asking for and they were so short, even renting it would be a waste of money.

That's actually because the PS3, Wii & 360 sections were just added for discussion because they came out before aD's usual upgrade/expansion cycle. We are at a new cycle that is supposed to be launched in just a few days if everything is lined up and correct. Hopefully there will be some delineation to separate and unclutter the Wii, 360 & PS3 sections a bit.

You can't judge an entire console user group based on a handful of idiots, and I don't think glass was trying to do that. Just so happens that when a system is hacked, those kinds of people surface from the woodwork and flood the forums with threads on how to "backup" a game (quote theirs), or where to find free games. PS3 threads for the most part have been free of that nonsense, and from that standpoint, I agree with glass. It's not a fanboy comment, just a fact. Once an exploit becomes available, the PS3 idiots will all surface.

I hope Geo doesn't get bought out. He seems like the kind of person who likes being a free spirit about this stuff. Hopefully he's not the kind of person who would be happy under the corporate thumb.

Another update for you guys: Geohot has just released the code that he used to exploit the PS3. He feels that right now, not much can be achieved with as of yet but he plans to provide us with something if the demand is there. He is starting to show signs of frustration with some of the PS3 mod community. Don't blame him though, if you looked at some of the comments he is getting, you'd understand why.

So there you have it aD, your PS3 has been hacked. How do you feel?

Bittersweet news. Now it's just a waiting game to see what comes next. Too bad for the pissing match on his blog. That would frustrate me to no end if I was him. Gonna be interesting watching this play out. George Hotz vs Sony vs haters...etc..

January 26th, 2010, the day that the PS3 has been openly exploited and given the chance to run to it's full potential without restrictions.

Geohot has just release the exploit itself to the general public. It's in zip form and available to download by anyone on his blog. I can't wait for the possibilities of homebrew and enhancing the media server opportunities. Really has been an exciting week. Besides the obvious "I can't wait to burn/backup games", what are you excited for?

i just find it funny that people with no real knowledge of wahts going on seem to instantly think that anything truely useful for pirates will come about from this. if you dont know whats going on then its prolly best that you dont comment. just wait and see.

I don't really see why people are coming to glassd's defense. He started out talking about the 360 forums and everyone just posting about stealing games but it was when he said "Seams to be better people that own it. More mature discusions." that I got irritated. He stopped arguing about keeping the PS3 section calm, friendly, and free of thieves and outright claimed PS3 owners are better people. I agree that the PS3 forums will explode with unwanted attention once it is exploited to play pirated games, but come on "better people"?. Anyway I'm done ranting now I think I made my point.

No this will not work for the new slim consoles.

He did say it on a PS3 section, its not like he went over to the 360 section and made a thread, i also dont think he meant to offend.

Maybe not and maybe I took it out of context.
How do you know whether or not the exploit will work with the slim version? You seem rather sure for not providing any explanation or source.

Even I got a bit hopeful because of his "name" in the scene but do agree not much will probably come out of this. Him "hacking" it and something of use actually being coded/developed are 2 extremely different things and anything close to that is still very remote.

Geohot said it himself that's why. You need OtherOS access for this to work and as of right now there is no OtherOS in Slim PS3's. This was pretty much a given and understood the moment he said he was messing with it to hack, since he said he was using an OtherOS from the start.

I hope this brings a whole new set of Apps and content to the PS3 like it did for the PSP.

Interesting read, seems like there's more security to overcome first before anything useful comes out of it.
If this does bring an ISO loader then i will use it, but only to back up the games i already own so to save any stress on the laser of my 60gb, and just keep it to play bluray films. I will still buy my games though especially with the lineup this year, GT5?, God of War 3, Heavy rain, FF13, Last Guardian, Yakuza 3. I think with the amount of money and time devs spend on making these games they deserve £40 off me to play them. (especially with the localization of Yakuza 3, if that doesn't sell well then Sega wouldn't want to bring Yakuza 4 to Europe, and tbh apart from GOW3 this is the game I'm most looking forward to.)

Homebrew Possibilities? All i want is MKV with soft sub support, and a Linux video encoder that utilizes the full power of the cell.

If the hack improves user interaction with PS3, then I am interested. My PS3 is PS2 backward compatible, so I play a mix of games, and some things I like are PS3, most are PS2. The blu-ray player is great.

I am the only in here that i dont see this as a hack?
It only works in otherOS, that gives a point to sony why they already have removed it from the slim models. They already knew about this.

    +1

I want a good and fast encoder too. Since my ps3 is the only Blu-Ray drive I have, it would be easier(=cheaper) to encode directly on ps3 rather than having to send all data over ethernet. (and let's not start talking again about what I'm encoding and if I'm going to upload it... and what about piracy... and is it legal...).

Back to "geohot hack": I honestly think everybody here wants something out of an hacked ps3. Probably wouldn't be reading this in the first place if not.
Even if geohot is a fake and he's a liar and nothing new is coming out of his "exploit", we will still keep wishing SOMEONE finds a way for homebrew to appear!
The only problem is homebrew doesn't code itself up alone (and we all know the ps3 isn't exactly easy to code on).

This exploit at this point needs a phat ps3 with linux in it. Needs you to compile some code. Need a ~40ns button press (WTF? 40ns?).
And MAYBE, all you get is some lv1 memory access that YOU need to find out what to do with. That's a lot of trouble.

So, unfortunately for the majority, until there's a downloadable file that you can place on a usb stick, turn on the ps3 and by some magical powers it starts running "backup" games, pulling up rss torrent feeds and doing some retro gaming all at the same time, no one will say the ps3 his hacked...

I think that's what everybody is waiting for! For SOMEONE else to do it for them AND in a easy way.

So why say geohot did something new? ("No he did not. That hack of his forces me to install linux on my console! What the hell is linux anyway?")

Don't get me wrong, I to am one of those just waiting to see where this geohot thing is taking the ps3 and I'm waiting and praying for someone with better coding skills then I to make some awesome ready to download... something!
But since my knowledge on this matter is somewhat limited, I'll just keep my observer distance, and most of all, from now on, I won't be calling geohot a liar if can't prove him wrong - neither will I say he's a genius if I don't understand what he has done. That's not productive and has been said a hundred times here. Good and bad.

Now, is there a thread about how to compile this? Who has linux on their ps3 and wants to try and see this "hack thing" running? =) I have YDL! Anyone successfully compiled this thing in it? How long did it take?
Tomorrow I'm giving this a go (huuuuu, my ps3 is going to explode!!), if nothing happens I'll come back to report (otherwise I'll hide my findings and sell them to the highest bidder).

NOTE: Sorry about the size of this testament, and double sorry for my bad english (it's not my native language).

Yeah, I thought the same thing. But if it does lead to something, there's plenty of fatty's on eBay.
