Hi, I've downloaded avi form, which I know to be an English speaking movie. However, when I am playing it, I can barely hear the english voices of the actors, because they are "overcomed" by Polish dubbing. I should add that, in this case, the expression "audio translation" is perhaps more accurate than "dubbing", becaus the one and only man we hear all the time speaking Polish does not pretend to impersonate the various figures (men and women). Hence, my question is how can I get rid of that Polish dubbing. Thanks in advance for any help. stibi
Very basic question, Does the file have two audio streams or one? Obviously if both languages exist in the same stream, you cannot separate them. However, if there's a 2nd stream, perhaps you'll find the English. Playing the file in VLC, or dropping it onto Virtualdubmod will reveal the stream info.
Hi, davexnet, and thanks for trying to help. Actually, I am playing video files with VLC media player 0.9.9. and so did I play that AVI file too; however - probably because of my ignorance - I don't know where does that player reveal the stream info. Next, I dropped the said Avi file into VirtualDubmod 1.5.10.2, however there appeared a window entitled "VirtualDub warning" with the following message:- "Couldn't locate decompressor for format XVID (unknown). VirtualDub requires a Video for Windows (VFW) compatible codec to decompress video.DirectShow codecs, such as those used by Windows Media Player, are not suitable. Only "Direct Stream copy'cs" available for this video." I should add that VirtualDubmod didn't play the AVI file, didn't display any pictures or any part of that video, and it looked as if there was no video there at all. It was only when I have entered into the File menu > File Information, I could see some details of that AVI. stibi stibi
Hi davexner and thanks, No streams were listed in virtualdubmod/streams/stream list (the word "stream list" was gray). Hence, upon your advise, I've downloaded and installed into my PC a Xvid codec; and now, after dragging the avi into VirtualDubMod, entering into Streams menu and clicking on "Stream List" there appeared a window entitled "Available streams" with the following data: Source : Input AVI file Desc : AVI audio stream 1 [tag 0x2000, ATSC/A-52 (Dolby AC3)] Length : 00:57:46.120 I suppose that means that both languages are in the same stream, and, therefore, there is no way to get rid of one of them. Is it so ? stibi
Almost certainly. However, the only way to know 100% is to listen to each channel. There may be a way through the ac3 mixer, or perhaps separate each channel to individual wav files and check them out. Sounds like a lot of trouble to me. If you want to pursue it, post something in the audio forum. Somebody else may know more about it.
Hi Stibi, OK, first off go into tools in your VLC player and under preferences, go to Interface Settings (should be the default that opens) for "Display Mode" select "Complete look with information area". Re-open VLC player and open your .avi file.. At the top of the player, you should have menu items: Media, Audio, Video, Playback, Playlist, Tools and Help (I think you get in the "classic mode" but "complete" looks better.. at least to me). Go to Audio. The first item is "Audio Track".. This will tell you if you have more than one audio stream or not and if so, which one is playing.. I have an .avi that same as you, defaults to "Portuguese" as audio track 1 (even though the original film is in English).. To get the original English track, I have to select track 2. Hopefully this will solve your problem watching as an .avi file. If you're trying to convert and burn to DVD I'm not sure if you can edit out any of the foreign tracks with the free programs available.. But, you can always select a different audio track with your DVD player.. Hope this helps.
Hi davexnet and Joleca and thanks for trying to help me. davenext :First, right after I started to play the AVI file with VLC media player 0.9.9, I entered into the "Audio" menu > Audio Chanels and selected "Right". I heared both languages (the Polish was more loud). The same happened when I selected "Left". I didn't try the ac3 mixer, since, as you thought, that seems to be too troublesome. Joleca: In the Audio menu of the VLC player I see there is only one stream and whichever side of it I am selecting to play I heare both languages at the same time. So, I presume, there is nothing more I can do with this AVI file. Still, I woould like to know, what did you mean by writing: "I think you get in the "classic mode" but "complete" looks better.. at least to me)". Where am I supposed to select the "classic mode" and the "complete mode" ? Or' perhaps you mean some other version of the VLC player ? Also, you wrote "If you're trying to convert and burn to DVD I'm not sure if you can edit out any of the foreign tracks with the free programs available". Do you mean, that you know about some not free program which could solve the problem ? Thanks again stibi
Same version of VLC player.. see the first line of my original post (personal preference I guess as to which view of player you like better) And, don't know of any programs personally.. have never tried to edit out a foreign track from a ".avi" file... only when backing up an actual DVD.. Some of the experts here at the forum might know if there are programs that will be able to do what you need.
Hi Joleca and thanks, About the possible that there exist's some program which could doo the jobb: do you think that I have to wait until somebody responses to it,if at all, or to pose that question (as a new one) to this forum or, perhaps to another one? I am asking this, since, acording to the rules of Afterdawn forums, one is not allowed to pose a question more than once. stibi
Unless the audio language commentaries are on separate tracks there is nothing to be done. If you extract the audio from the AVI with VirtualDubMod: 'Streams' > 'Stream List'. Right click on the audio stream and select 'Full compression' and 'No Compression' then click on the 'Save WAV' button. Open Audacity and either load or drag the .wav file. Separate the stereo stream into tracks. Play each track separately and see if the audio is the same. http://www.afterdawn.com/software/audio_software/audio_tools/audacity.cfm
Hi attar, After loading the avi file into VirtualDubMod, at the moment I clicked on Streams > Stream List, there appeared a window entitled "Available Streams" copy of which you will find at http://yfrog.com/1jvirtualdubmodavailablesp and I was unable to "Right click on the audio stream and select 'Full compression' and 'No Compression' ". Any suggestions? stibi
Should be: 'Streams' > 'Stream List'. Right click on the audio stream, choose 'Full processing Mode' then select 'Full compression' and 'No Compression' then click on the 'Save WAV' button.
Hi attar, Like always (well, almost),You were right. Unfortunately, notwithastanding that I splitted te stero with audacity, even when I played each chanel seperately the audio was the same. Pitty, because during the last days, when I still hopped to find a solution for the movie I mentioned, I have downloaded several English documentary movies with dubbings in other languages. Anyway, thanks a lot. P.S. Since many years ago I have been working with Cool Edit; however, I havn't seen there the "Split Stereo track" function. stibi
In Sony Sound Forge, not necessary to split the track. You just hilight the right or left channel and hit play and it plays just that channel. Not sure if any of the other editors do that.
Hi davexnet and thanks, In Cool Edit too (which I have) one can higlight the right or left channel and play only the highlighted channel. As a matter of fact, one can do the same with Audity; so I don't understand what more does the "Split Stereo Track". Anyway, I have tried it, however it didn't help. stibi
