Can anyone please help give me some ideas to solve this problem? I've been burning DVDs successfully for 6 months or so, but now always get a burn ring about 1/4 inch from the start of the burn in the middle of the disc, which causes the DVD to freeze about 1 to 2 minutes into the movie when I play it. Occasionaly the burn ring is about 1/2 inch from the outer edge of the disc, but I haven't had a successful burn for weeks :(
I use DVDdecrypter and/or DVD shrink for extraction, and Nero 6.6 to burn. I've tried writing at 4X and 2X. I also tried DVDclone and get exactly the same problem. I've tried Sony and TDK DVD-R media, with the same results. I also defragged the hard drive.
Has anyone got any ideas? I'd really appreciate any help, thanks.

well, have u tried ImgBurn to see if nero is causing the problem?

What is the max speed of the disks u r using?
It is best to burn at half of the max speed on the disks

Is it a dell PC? if so u might want to look for a firmware update?

    It could be the media?
u could pick some up and try these to rule out if the media is the problem?

this is the best media u can get

    Verbatims

Thanks for the reply! No, I hadn't heard of ImgBurn - but will try it.

As for the discs, they're rated at 16X.

Yes, it's a Dell PC, so I will look for a firmware update. Also will try a different media, but I'm suspicious it's something else as I've burned OK in the past with Sony, TDK, Memorex and Verbatim.

Well, ImgBurn gave me the same problems with a burn ring as Nero. So I downloaded new firmware for my drive, which helped a bit, although I still got a burn ring on 50% of the discs I burned. Finally I tried with Verbatim DVD+R discs, which helps a lot, but I still get the occasional burn ring and another coaster.
It's odd, as I could use many different medias before. Now it looks like I'm restricted to Verbatim.
So does anyone know, are the Sony and TDK media worse than they were a few months ago, or do you think my drive is faulty?

Well it all depends on the Manufactor of those disks, i have heard good reviews about the Sony ones u were using and tdk is not considered to be good media.

Just curious what speed are u burning the Verbs at or the Sonys?
If they are 16x max speed i would suggest burning them a 8x speed, especially the verbs, as i saw on ur log u were burning them at 4x

Just tried burning at 8X again, and get a big burn ring towards the end of the disc, and it freezes on playing it. If I burn at 4X, most of the time the discs are OK, but sometimes I still get a lighter burn ring, or sometimes even a semicircle, near the middle of the disc, but my player seems to read it OK.
If the drive is on the way out is this what happens, or do I still need to try a few things software-wise?
    Thanks for all the help!

im not sure if that happens when ur burner is going out, wait for someone with more knowledge about that suject to reply, i really dont know what else it could be if the same thing happens with different burning programs and high quality media like the verbatims.

    So this doesn't happen everytime?
did u get the newest version of the firmware?
Im kinda stumped as i said earlier.

I replaced my DVD burner with a new one, and the problem is solved. I can burn on any media, any speed now. So, it was a hardware problem. Thanks for your help.
