I'm totaly new to dvd recording/backup. In fact, I havent even recorded a DVD yet. I purchased a mad dog mega store 7-in-1 16x dvd +-R & +-RW the other day. Also it is a double layer 4x. I just finished loading nero that came with the recorder and I would like to get started, but I'm not sure what other programs to use with nero--there's so much info and recomendations that I'm not certain where to begin. What programs would you recommend with the info I provided? Do I need to provide more. Thanks
@FitNut, Your Nero is pretty good enough to do movie back up. However, there is only one problem with Nero -- that is, it "won't" back up any DVD movie(s) that has protection codes. Therefore, you'll need one more program to "decrypt" the DVD movie that will let you bypass the protection code so your Nero can do the back up process. As for newbie(s), I would recommend you to download DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter, both from this site [afterdawn.com], and DVD43 (a very good and useful protection codes cracking program). Of course, the three programs are "free" and very easy to use. Evidently, DVD Decrypter alone can "decrypt" or bypass any old/new protection codes flawlessly. You then will need to "compress or encode" with DVD Shrink so that the DVD movie you're going to burn/back up is perfectly fit into a single DVD-R/+R disc. There is a setting on DVD Shrink that you can set up so the DVD movie you're "encoding & compressing" can be back up by either NERO or DVD Decrypter. In addition, you can "decrypt" the movie using DVD Decrypter and once it's completed, you can open up your "NERO Recode 2" to encode/compress the movie and then back up/burn the movie as well. On the other hand, some people would prefer "AnyDVD" instead of DVD43, but AnyDVD is not free, it has a free 30 days trial only. In my opinion, DVD43 (free) is as great as AnyDVD (retail), but it doesn't get updated as much as AnyDVD. In the end, the choice is yours to make and pick whatever that's floating in your boat. Below is a basic and simple way to back up DVD movie(s) using DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink. ***Here is a simple and basic steps to back up DVD movie using DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink on a DVD5 disc(single layer), assuming you already have the latest from Decrypter & Shrink.*** ** put blank dvd (please use good media such as Fuji, Verbatim, Maxell or Sony) in dvd burner ** put original dvd in dvd rom ** open up your c: drive or hard drive, go to NEW, Folder, name it “NEWBACKUPMOVIE” or anything you want, then hit [enter] to save the Folder ** open up DVD Decrypter, MODE, ISO, READ R ** choose your SOURCE <-- your dvd rom with Original movie ** choose your Destination <-- browse to your hard drive with your newly created folder earlier; example:NEWBACKUPMOVIE, then click on OPEN, and SAVE ** now click on DECRYPT, wait until it's completed, and closed DVD Decrypter (this takes about 15 - 20 mins or depending on your computer specs) ** open up DVD Shrink, go to FILE, Open Disc Image, and browse to your ISO you created with DVD Decrypter(NEWBACKUPMOVIE) in your hard drive, and OPEN it ** DVD Shrink should do a quick Analysis now.... wait until it's completed ** NOTE: if you want super quality and just the main movie only without the extras and menu, then you can click on "Re-author" mode, click on "main title 1" and drag it to drop under the "DVD Structure", then click on BACKUP, and OK **NOTE: if you want to do a “CUSTOM” on a DVD-R/+R disc, set your CUSTOM to “4400MB” or to your desire, but don’t “exceed” a DVD-R/+R’s capacity, to do this, go to EDIT, then PREFERENCES, and set it up, then hit “OK” when you’re done. ** NOTE: if you want "Full Disc Backup" with better quality, then you should set the "quality settings" to “Maximum Sharpness” or to your desire ** click on BACKUP, on TARGET DEVICE, select “Backup Target to: ISO Image File and Burn with DVD Decrypter”, and on "select target image file": browse to your folder you created earlier “NEWBACKUPMOVIE” in your Hard Drive ** now hit OK, sit back and relax, DVD Shrink will do the encoding, wait until it's completed (this takes anywhere from 20 - 35 mins depending on your computer specs) ** once Shrink is done, it should automatically back up with DVD Decrypter. ** that's it.... wait for Decrypter to finish the back up process and you're done (this takes about 7 - 10 mins depending on your computer specs). Hope this help you a little. Have fun burning!!!
alkohol said it all. I can't add anything. Nice reply alkohol! I will add that you can copy his guide to paper and have it in front of you for the first few times. A checklist keeps you from forgetting steps.
@alkohol hey man, i couldn't have said it better...hopefully they aren't working you too bad @fitnut Welcome to the site, and if you still have trouble fasfrank has a nice lil' link in his sig you can go to..
You get all that Fixnut? iam sure your have a dvd backup in no time right. come back if you have a hangup doing it
All...Thanks for the help!!!! I tried to do what alkohol said to the letter, but when I finshed all I had was a DVD that my PC did not even recognize was in the drive. I'm trying again, but I think I may be making a small mistake along the way. I have downloaded decrypter, shrink, and DVD43. I am decryting a DVD right now...after that is completed I have to use either shrink or DVD43...right???? Or do I sue both????? UGHHHHH!!!! I think I may be duplicating one of the steps, but Im not sure.
@alkohol - see, i told you that you were giving good advice to ppl!. had subscribed to this thread on the offchance a few days ago but could see you'd got it all in hand, nice one
@creaky, I'm fairly new, but I'll try to pick up little by little as times goes by. Like I said; you [creaky], kivory666, rotary, hursty and fastfrank are a few of the coolest members at afterdawn.com. Plus my other bro aka "evnflow", he's one of the coolest in the PS2 forum so far. So, yeah... we could only try to help each others when that individual needed help right? On the other hand, I've been backing up movies for ages, thus, I rarely [or don't] have any issues when I performed my backing up process. Perhaps it's because of I've acquired very little experiences and knowledge for years. In other words, I guess the few of us are able to succeed through our skills and experiences in pertain to backing up movies. Thanks for the words.
@FitNut, Just out of curiousity what movie (dvd) are you trying to back up? I'm not so sure why you're able to decrypt the movie into your hard drive, but your PC can not recognize it - this is odd?? Need more explanation, and don't forget about the "good quality blank medias" I've mentioned earlier -- that is a must to have a good and decent back up. DVD Decrypter alone can "decrypt" or bypass any new/old protection codes on new dvd movies. The only time you use DVD43 is when DVD Decrypter failed to do so, but that's unlikely because I know for sure that DVD Decrypter is the King for cracking the protection codes. Now listen, after you've "decrypted" your movie using DVD Decrypter into your hard drive, closed DVD Decrypter. You then open up DVD Shrink and click on "File", "Open Disc Image", browse to your newly created back up movie that you've just "decrypted" into your hard drive, and click OPEN. DVD Shrink will bring out your movie and do a quick analysis. After that I suggest you to re-read my first post and follow the simple guide closely. If you happen to have any issues then let us know and we'll try to help you out.
thanks man...makin' me blush...lol @fitnut....(1st way is with a dvd-rom and a dvd burner,2nd way with dvd burner only) if you are putting the dvd in the dvd-rom, then a blank in the burner all you will need is too make sure that dvd43 is running in the background(should be a lil' smilie face in the bottom of your tray, that turns green once it has broken teh encryption), then open dvd shrink and like alkohol said click on "open disc" to start the analysis, and once done select the drive the burner is on, and click ok if you are using just one drive for everything(i.e. the dvd burner)then you will have to use dvd decrypter to put it on your hard drive(click on "file", then "iso", then on "read", then click the pic of the disc pointing at the hard drive), then once done open dvd shrink and click on "disc image", then go to the folder you put the dvd iso, and mds file in...click on the file...and it should open it up for analysis and then click on "backup" and select the drive you are sending to, to be burned with..and let it go(as stated by alkohol)
@alkohol, Pretty good post there good guy. I have only one thing to add ~ DVD43 was upgraded to include the empty files used in the ARccOS encryption in late Feb. 2005 BUT it took them 5 months to do it AND DVD43 has issues with other backup proggys while AnyDVD does not. As for updates ~ When the ARccOS encryption came out, it was broken the next day by AnyDVD and when the Settec ALPHA-DVD came out, AnyDVD had that ripped the day BEFORE ! ! In this case, it's my opinion, you DO get what you pay for. @FitNut , Iffin you get lost, try here: http://www.dvdplusvideo.com/petesguide3.html Cheers, Pete
@ScubaPete, Sorry if I've offended you in any way or have said something wrong alright mate - cheers now. I didn't mean to pimp any cracking code programs, but am just doing the "new guy" a favor for some "free" products that's basically. Well, you are definitely right about AnyDVD getting updates weekly, perhaps once a day, or sometimes it even updates twice a day just to make sure it (AnyDVD) can crack (break) the newest protection codes on the newest dvd release upon arrival dates -- at least, that's what I've heard and or been told by friends whom has had used/owned AnyDVD. However, I strongly deem that it may be "better" than DVD43, but it certainly is "not" the best i.e. the only #1 program that will crack protection codes available in the market. There are still a few great programs that will crack protection codes flawlessly out there, to name a few, such as DVDIdle Pro, DVD Region+CSS Free, and of course the king is still alive aka DVD Decrypter (free) and lastly DVD43 (free). As a matter of fact, DVDIdle Pro and DVD Region+CSS Free both updates weekly just to make sure it can crack the latest protection codes as well. I have nothing against AnyDVD and believe me when I said it, it's a great program. However, to be honest, I've tried its [AnyDVD] 30 days trial and I've found some flaws with AnyDVD. I once backed up HOFD, HITCH and SPANGLISH with AnyDVD using its official trial version and to my knowledge it failed to crack them movies. Perhaps, I was not quite as lucky as others at that moment. On the other hand, when I tried it with DVD Decrypter alone it "decrypted" HOFD and HITCH flawlessly. Again, I backed up "SPANGLISH" using InterVideo DVD Copy 3 and DVD43 successfully. Additionally, I backed up Coach Carter and HOSTAGE with DVD Shrink and DVD43 running in the background like a champ without any conflicts what-so-ever. In contrast, I definitely am, just use whatever that will do the job for me and I'll strive to use what I've the most experiences with and the little knowledge that I've acquired in due time. With that being said, and in other words, what works best for you "may not" work for others. So choose whatever that's floating in your boat. Please feel free to educate me any time, I'm willing to listen and learn, but give me a good reason why I need to have AnyDVD (retail) when DVD Decrypter (free) and DVD43 (free) is working perfectly for me? I might need it (AnyDVD) someday, but not now. Again, sorry for the long post, and seriously, I didn't mean to hijack this thread. lol...
Hey there alkohol, No worries, I'm not offended ~ DVD43 could never crack all the DVD's. Always remember to tell pple about the "problems" with DVD43. We should also make note that there have been issues concerning DVD43, Nero, CloneDVD2 and Recode2. Finally, as noted on DVD43's homepage, it does involve turning other proggys that makes one remove DVD43 and reboot their system to work around the issues. FYI, I used AnyDVD on all those you listed and had no problem. I also purchased AnyDVD after the first 10-days and never regretted it. When you use it, day in and day out, I think you get an excellent "feel" for what it does. I have, however turned it off for some good periods to use other rippers and though DVD43 works for most of the older DVD's it sometimes fails when small twists and turns are thrown at it. The thing is, DVDD was, IMO the best of the bunch and for now, it still is . . . . Too bad it's run is done . When it becomes outdated, thankfully that won't be for quite a while then AnyDVD will rule !. One thing I'll always bow too, If it works, no matter what pple say, use it! Never break what isn't broke. If you're happy with DVD43, Super BUT it is, way down on my personal list of programs that I would ever recommend to someone as a top-of-the-line ripper. I suppose it's the recommending of, what I perceive as second rate things that bothers me a bit too much - Sorry for the 'BLOW". I do suggest you check AnyDVD's "History" and sea how many times it's been upgraded to cover the little twists and turns that Sony's ARccOS and other encryptions has thrown at us. Also, you might note that DVD43 only works on Win 2000 and XP while AnyDVD works on all OS's. A big factor when recommending something for the masses. Cheers good guy, Let peace and harmony reign Pete
@ScubaPete, I'm relief now... hahahas lol For a minute or so I was a bit worried, but not anymore. Anyways, I'm glad that I joined this forum afterall; it is people like you and a few other knowledgeable members here at afterdawn.com that I gain my knowledge from. Apparently, I'm still learning and believe me -- every day I come in here, I learn something new. Cheers now , you have a good morning/day there all right. By the way, I will surely buy AnyDVD when DVD Decrypter can no longer decrypt any new encrypted protections. I'll definitely keep that in mind that it was you who recommended me the program all right.
i was thinking about breaking down and buying anydvd, but i think i'm going to wait till dvd43 and decrypter just can't do it anymore...even though i missed the chance to buy at a discount a week or two ago
@alokohol, nice posts, finally we have someone who can write posts to equal scubapete's epic posts LOL. They're great, keep it up @evnflow - i'm still thinking about Anydvd, i'm not gonna break just yet :O
