I'm on a new HP and I'm clueless as to how to get started so I can copy a movie I would like to keep for myself.

Firstly, there are tons of guides available at this site and in my sig.

Next download the following free programs:

    DVDdecrypter from: http://mrbass.org/dvdrip/

    DVDShrink from: http://mrbass.org/dvdshrink/

    Imgburn from: http://www.imgburn.com/

    DVDFabdecrypter from: http://dvdidle.com/free.htm

and DVD43 from the above as well.

With these programs you will be well on the way. There are other programs available as well, but for starters these will serve you well. Read, read, read. Use the guides and follow them step by step and you will be making backups in short order.

Get quality media for your backups, burn at 4x. Use Verbatim or Taiyo Yudens for the best results, but Maxell's are good and so is Sony. Stay away from memorex as it is poor quality and your backups will suffer.

Use the guides in my signature.
