I was reading gmaeinformer yesterday when in the gear section they had shown the: PNY XLR8 GeForce 8800 Saying that it's a good video card that could run crysis and it dosen't cost too much. It has "112 stream processors, 512MB of onboard RAM, and a 256-bit memory interface". For just $249.99 Good deal? Good card?
Are you referring to the 8800GT? It's an ok card, but the only reason it gets good performance in games like Crysis is because nvidia "cheated" their drivers, so when they find crysis.exe running, the card will automatically sacrifice image quality for performance. On top of that, the coolers on them are real loud, and the card runs real hot too. So over clocking with the stock cooler is impossible. Nothing can play Crysis on max with frames above 40 constant. With 2x 3870s in CF, I get about 25-30 with everything on very high for an average.
its a damned good card. not just ok. and you can just change the .exe to a differernt name to get that image quality back, but ull loose a whoel load of frames. have you updated, because at your res, with xfire 3870s, you should pulling in over 40. the stock cooler can be laud, but only at the coldboot, and yes it doesnt get hot, but set the fan to 60%, and ehat is fine, and you wont hear the fan. not i am nto a fanboy, just it gets to me when i have to defend a good product that peopel intentionally call bad, when they dont have one and have the other brands product. you seems liek and anti-nvdidia fanboy to me.
Well yes, I do prefer ATi products over nVidia, although I did own a 6800GS in my AGP system (still have it). I just think that nVidia cheated a lot of people, and didn't think they would find out the differences in image quality vs performance. I mean, the 3870 should perform way better than the GT, it's got a faster core and memory clock, GDDR4, 320 stream processors vs the 8800's 128, and it's more future proof. I just dont get why the 8800GT performs better. Maybe it's the drivers... Well 3x 8800Ultras in SLi couldn't get great frames in Crysis, not sure what the numbers were but I remember reading the article.
