DVD resolution is 720x480 (North America NTSC).

I don't know about converting video to Blu-ray format, but I know there are disks, burners and players - so I assume there are transcoders too.

Thanks for the reply, i was reading on another site about these new dvd recorders that could record HD tv onto standard disks with no quality loss, not to sure how old the thread was or if the technology was ever pursued.

What ever method they were using to encode the video stream must have kept the resolution for quality, but they could record it to standard dvd's.

But obviously you probably needed the recorder to play them back but who knows, if eveybody eventually gets an HDTV then they might bring out dvd players that can play some new none standard PAL or NTSC format from standard dvd's, just a little fantasy of mine i guess.
