    8800GT or 3870 (8800GT performance is better)

    Core 2 Quad Q6600

    Anything with a nvidia 6**i chipset, a socket 775 and PCI-e 16x or PCI-e 2.0 for the GT.

The HD3870 however will produce a better quality image, and notably will run Crysis with the same results as an 8800GT. Just thought I'd drop that in. Since the HD3870 is cheaper over here than the 8800 I believe, you may as well save money...

Yeah, I would've gone with the 3870 too, but after looking at some other reviews of the 3870 vs the GT in games like World In Conflict, there is a 20fps difference I believe, which is quite a lot.

But the 3870 still costs less... Also note that the GT issue with Crysis quality can be fixed with a simple hack, although I still believe it was very stupid of nvidia to put that in the drivers.

Indeed, but nonetheless, it's stupid. As for World in Conflict, the difference is not that severe in any of the Tom's Hardware benchmarks. 24.5fps vs 35 is a large gap I'll admit, but that benchmark requires AA, which of course in Vista, the 8800 series can't render.

I think so, at the moment. Unless you have a LOT of money, it seems stupid to spend so much on what is essentially now old tech.
