Hi guy's, once again I'm looking for your help with something like this.

A friend of mine had a pc lying around for awhile as it was in a nasty state, couldn't access the net, pc very very slow. So I told him to re-format.

I think he was running off windows 2000 and as he hadn't got his original cd I told him he could use my windows 2000 professional cd.

So yes the re-format went very well and the clean install went great.

Well we thought it went great until firstly we plugged in the ethernet cable and tried to access the net. We went through the internet LAN settings, turned them to automatic detect connection and so on but no luck.

So then we installed ad-aware from a cd and noticed the colour was off and also no sound at all from the pc.

We've searched different sites for hours trying to find the right drivers. We did install one driver successfully and now we have sound :)

But colour is way off and can't access the net via a router with ethernet connection.

The pc is pretty old and I think the name of it is ENCON s/n 3059134.

    It's running off windows 2000 service pack 4 and Intel[R] Celeron [R] CPU 1.80ghz.

Is it a driver probem that we can't access the net ?

    Thanks Guys

It's more than likely the NIC drivers need to be installed, or reinstalled.

If you don't know what kind the NIC card is, or the Device Manager doesn't have that information, open the case and remove the card. All the information will be on that card, but it's the chip version you want to match up with the drivers you'll be looking for. That information is on the largest black chip on the card.

Once you have that info, and download the correct drivers...put them on a CD or a floppy. Go into Device Manager and remove the NIC from the list, put the driver disk into the computer and reboot.

If it asks for the drivers, point it to the disk. If not, go into Device Manager, right click the NIC and go to Update Drivers. Point the hardware manager to the .inf file. That way seems to work better than most driver installation setup files.

Hi Morph416 and thanks for your reply.

The info you've gave me, I'll keep it in mind cause I'm tryin to learn this stuff, slowly but surely gettin there :)

It pis*sed me off so much that I brought it to a friend of mine who works in a pc shop and he opened it up and checked the model of the chipset and downloaded a driver in a couple of minutes and it works fine now.

We were tryin to suss it for hrs last night!

As I said, thanks for your reply and I'll keep that info in mind for the next time.
