Hi this Tutorial is for backing up profiles and bookmarks for Firefox 1.0 - 3.1.

First off lets talk about a third party app. Called Mozbackup. Which can you download from here.

    http://mozbackup.jasnapaka.com/

Download it first then Un-Zip/Un-rar it. From here you choices where to put Mozbackup folder (I.E. External, USB Thumbdrive) Once you figure out where you want it. Now open MozBackup within the folder. You should get this screen to open up. See picture below for help

From here select which version you want to back up your profile (I.E. Mozilla 1.3/3.0,Thunderbird and portable apps) Or which version to Restore your profile. Click either box then click next. See picture below for help

Now at the profile selection click which profile you want to backup or restore. After that now you can decide where to put your backup from browse then choose. If want you can leave it be default. Meaning (I.E. E:/Mybook/Mozbackup-1.4.9a-En) Or wherever you put Mozbackup folder. If you are restoring a profile by default it will find the backup location or you can search for the backup though browse. See picture below for help

Clicking next will now take you to a list of check boxes (I.E. General settings,E-mails,Address Book,Bookmarks,History,Sidebars,User styles,Extensions,Saved Passwords,Cookies,Add-Ons,Download history list,Certificates and Cache) After selecting which boxes you want click next. Then wait for it to backup or restore your profile. Then you are done. See picture below for help

Works with Windows 98/ME/NT/2000/XP/2003/Vista. Sorry no Linux version or Mac. I have not tried Mac or Linux to see if it will work.

Second part Manually backing up your profile

For Windows Users there is a couple of ways to do this. First option is Press Windows Key+R then type %APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\5eh11egu.defaul t\bookmarkbackups\ click ok. This will work for Firefox 3.0 in Windows 2000 and XP. By typing in that it should take you directly to your Bookmarks folder. Now depending on which version of Firefox you have that type path will change slightly. Due to version you have.

Second option is goto My Computer. After that click C:drive then Documents and Settings. Click on User or whatever is Windows profile name is. Find Appilcation Data folder from there click Mozilla folder. Should be two folders one Crash
Reports and Firefox. Select Firefox then your version of Firefox. From there should be a folder called bookmarkbackups click it. Example path below.

    C:\Documents and Settings\User\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\Version of Firefox\bookmarkbackups

Either ways allow you to backup your bookmarks only

    Now time for Windows Vista
Press Windows Key+R then type %APPDATA%\Mozilla Just like Windows XP. Example path below for Windows Vista. Same as XP but a little different file path but you get the drift.

    C:\Users\<user name>\AppData\Roaming\Mozllia\Firefox\Profiles\You r version\Bookmarks

Either ways allow you to backup your bookmarks only

Now you put your bookmarks wherever you want to (I.E. USB Thumbdrive or External harddrive)

Yes it does work on Vista and the latest version of Firefox. It is great when you Reinstall often or have 30 or more bookmarks

May also want to look into a few other addons just to compare with your method (not saying its wrong or anything but I prefer these methods). Although I have used Mozbackup before and I do recommend it for backing up your profile with minimal fuss.

An addon called Weave Sync. It will connect to a server and you can upload your bookmarks, saved passwords, preferences, history, and tabs. I believe you can also upload to your own server but I haven't looked into that yet.

Or if you don't trust your data to the cloud, you can also try out FEBE. It can make entire backups of your firefox profile, including addons, and save everything to your hard drive. I'm not going to list everything it does since it saves EVERYTHING. You can also schedule it to run daily, weekly, monthly, and many other custom times. Or just set it to warn you if you choose.
