    Help,

My friend is on holiday and I just borrowed his X-box for the week. I have no idea which type it is, I plugged it in (with one of those scart (?)things and all I get are green colours???

As is very clear my knowledge concerning these things is absolutely nihil, however, I was still looking forward to playing some games and I would prefer not to do these in 'just green'

    What is going on?

I didn't know where this thread belonged so hope someone will read this who can help me.

Many many thanks to those who will reply

    Barbara

sounds like you're using a RGB component level cable and it should have 5 connections going to the receiver (TV) make sure they are hooked up correctly. with you only having green it appears you've only got the G hooked up or you have hooked it up to a 'yellow' RCA 3 line input not a raw component level.

    thanks for your reply,

the only cable that I can connect to my tv is a scart cable (the one with all those pins in). Only one way to connect those. I cannot 'hook' up different components. I have my cable, one end goes into the xbox (which I now believe to be a plain and simple xbox, no added numbers) and the other end goes into the 'ext' end of the tv down the back. It is by the way also the only way to connect anything to my tv so I don't have any other connection capabilities on this tv (i.e, no other 'holes'). I believed those scartsockets were full and complete connections with not having to worry which bit to stick where but this is obviously not true.

I thought at first that maybe I hadn't put in in fully enough, but having checked that, I know that is not the problem.

So, thank you for your reply but it seems I still have my problems, and it also seems I will not have a solution to it either.

Any other views of course will be much appreciated.

the TV has RCA holes for the plugs to go into, if it's standard RCA 3 line it will have a Red/White/Yellow raw component video has the same RCA plugs but they are in 5 different 'pins' and they will be Red/Green/Blue & Red/White but the Red will be labeled Cr the blue will be Cb and the Green will be Y

    I'll include a pic below.........

IF you have a component cable from the box (with 5 wires) and you've hooked it to a TV that only has the RCA input (3 holes) then thats what the problem is.

it is as I thought, after I posted the other reply, I looked up 'scart' on the internet and found out it is something only used in Europe (where I live). really handy things and supposedly a step up from the RGB you describe, most TV's have these RGB things but no one uses them anymore as you can connect everything with a scart socket these days. The xbox doesn't have an RGB connection, nor does my tv. The scart connection is there supposedly so we wouldn't have those annoying wires hanging all over the place. This is the first time in my life I have any problems with it. In Fact I highly doubt it's the cable and am beginning to suspect it might be my tv (it was working fine on another tv at another friend's place)

Above is the picture of a scart socket as we use them.

thanks for trying to help me

SCART is just a single cable with all the RGB/Audio built in, it's no step up in quality just a more conductor single cable as opposed to 5 seperate shilded ones and also include a 'return' (an out) Pin 15/11/7 are R/G/B (5/9/13 being the GND of those) 2/6 are the audio Red/White from above, and pin 20 is the same as the Yellow video above.

Great! you knew what I was talking about then :)

I meant the 'step up' as, like you said, you don't have any cables hanging around. And people like me can't foolishly stick the wrong pins in the wrong holes either and then complain it doesn't work.

Maybe I should just buy a new tv set. I'm already dreading the end of analogue tv in 2 years time. I think it's a safe bet my tv won't take to digital...

There is a setting in the main setup menu on your PS2 where you can chose between RGB signal and some other...it's called RP/...and then some other abbreviations. Chose RGB and the color should be all good.

Looking at your sig I can agree with the idiot bit FishDK.. lol..

This is an xbox forum..why are you talking about a ps2?

The green thingy could still be a problem with your cables.. Is this an original xbox cable with the red, white and yellow cables plugged into a scart connector, or is it some xbox rgb cable which goes either to a scart plug direct on the end of the wire, or with 5 plugs into another scart connector box?

Try some settings in your tv.. It's possible your tv is set to svhs instead of av, or that something is up with the usual auto rgb/av switching arrangement detection.
My old tatung tv has 3 different av input channels..rgb, av and svhs..selected from the remote..sounds like it may be on the wrong one, or as said, the cable is strange.

Nah - no worries. I found the link by the search function bc I was looking for Scart questions and somehow just thought that it was a ps2 thread.
