My LG GSA-4163B will not always read dvd-r's and nero will not burn onto them, yet it used to. I updated the firmware to A105 and back dated windows to a date it did burn dvds. Also nero will burn stuff to CD and it will burn data dvd's any suggestions? Also one last thing is there a way I can shrink the size of files to fit a cd or dvd

Firmware for that drive is A106
To shrink files to fit your needs you'll need Shrink or one of the software downloads offered right here on this site. Use the Search Button to look for Shrink threads.

See my sig about media; unless you are burning Verbatim or Taiyo-Yuden, the true maker of the media you are using may have changed, even if you are using the same brand.

A106 is the most current FW.

Failing that, odds are good that your drive crapped out. I have the same drive and it's terrible. No more LG for me.

If Nero will burn data DVDs but not Video-DVDs, that suggests to me one of two things: One, you are not using the Video-DVD compilation type, which you MUST in order to get reliable video discs, or two, your media is no good i.e. see my sig on that.
