OK, you bought COD4 and you want to play it in 1080p--aaaaaaah yeah! But you don't know how, here's how:

YOUR TV MUST SUPPORT 1080p IN ORDER TO PLAY GAMES IN 1080p. DUH

OK, most games require an High-defintion multimedia input (A.K.A. HDMI) input to output in 1080p. About 80% of PS3 games require that. To setup an HDMI connection, you will need:

    ANY HDMI CABLE
    AN HDTV SUPPORTING 1080p
    A PLAYSTATION 3

Now, if your PS3 is connected to your TV via A/V/Composite, plug in the HDMI cable into the PS3, then in the TV. LEAVE THE A/V/COMPOSITE CABLES IN AND CONNECTED. Now, go to Settings>Display Settings>Video Output Settings. Now, you have to choose how the PS3 is connected to the TV. Select HDMI. The screen will go blank, and go back on. Confirm a few steps, then select all the resolutions selected by your TV. Don't forget to choose 1080p!

Then, confirm, and the default output on your PS3 will be 1080p, meaning all games that support 1080p will output in 1080p.

*Note: Some games don't require HDMI connection, but I prefer HDMI.

Actually through recent firmware updates you don't even have to do any of that just plug in the HDMI and it will automatically send a signal through the HDMI asking if you want to use it.

"meaning all games that support 1080p will output in 1080p"

This, of course, is obvious. But the games that don't support 1080p, will those be displayed in 1080p? Will it look choppy?

Thats just it. Call of Duty 4 will set it self to 720p even though your ps3/tv would support 1080p because the game is made for 720p.

Now you can force it to 1080p, but the game will "upscale" the picture to 1080p, eg. stretch the image to that proportion.

Call of Duty 4 does not have content that actually displays naturally in that size or takes any real advantage of the additional space proceeded in the 1080p resolution.
