The first utility you can use, is called MSCONFIG. This general utility shows you what services and startup programs XP uses or has installed. (Note: malicious software such as rootkits or trojans may not show up here)

Go to Start, Run and type in msconfig

Click on the Startup tab, and you will see a listing of the programs set to run at startup. Can't give ya much more detail on what you have running unless you post back what you have in that list.

You can also check what services are running. Go to Start>Run type services.msc

These are all the services that are loaded at boot. Some are needed and some aren't (like terminal services) Be careful what you shutdown though. Research what each service does before you change it.

Also, you can hit ctrl-shft-esc and that will bring up the task manager and show you all the processed that are currently running.

Hi catsee, I use a little program called startup control panel, it integrates into windows control panel and is small and easy to use. You can also use a .exe stand alone version to perform the same functions, but as it's something that should be included in windows anyway I think you are better off installing the control panel version. You can dl it from this link:

Like doubledwn said, you have to research what the individual processes are and what they do before you kill them or disable them. Go to google and type whatever service and what is it, eg "wmiprvse.exe what is it?" here is a site with peoples accounts of what happened when they stopped/started most tasks and services. If you want to stop a service or disable it from starting in future, or set it to manually start so it only starts when you run something that actually needs it (some must be disabled to properly disappear though), go to admin tools in control panel and then services, here you can check all the services in your box and you can modify how and if they start. Again, be careful, only change stuff that you know is ok from your research on google. Mostly you only need to set it to manual to make the service go too.

To stop apps from running simply unchech the box, next to the application. U can also check out as they said services.msc and gpedit.msc, u also have regedit.
