I downloaded a video which is playable with Windows Media Player 9 and VLC player but the seeking is jerky. Media Player Classic will only play the audio with blacked-out screen. GSPOT shows the file contain H264/x264 ITU H.26n video and MP3 audio. I wish to convert it to DivX. Do I need to demux it first before converting? VirtualDub won't runs the video, asking for the VFW codecs. I have installed x264 and it should works if it is supported by VirtualDub, right? googling around didn;t turn up anything useful. hope someone here can provide me some information and guidance. thanx!
So it is an avi? x264 is an encoder only it doesn't contain a decoder. You need to use libavcodec which means ffdshow. Make sure that h.264 decoding is enabled for VfW, not just dshow.
the file is AVI. so with the libracodec in FFDshow, VirtualDub should be able to demux it? my CPU is AMD 1800+ 512MB RAM. UPDATE: latest FFDshow installed. the version on my system was very old. after updating, the AVI play fine with Media Player Classic but VirtualDub Mod is still asking for VFW codec to play the file. With VirtualDub Mod unable to play the video, it is impossible to demux the file. The problem seems to be the similar to what I faced when I used VirtualDub Mod to open a MKV containing RealMedia video and OGG audio. I solved it by demuxing the file using MKVextractGUI and then converting the video and audio elements separately before muxing them into avi using Virtualdub. any similar tool for demuxing AVI with H264 video? EDIT: just found the setting to activate the VFW codec for H264 that comes with the ffdshow. VirtualDub can now process and convert the AVI! Just can't understand why River Past Video Cleaner won't work with it as it is the fastest DivX converter on my system. EDIT: River Past Video Cleaner works if I convert video ONLY! well, I can use VirtualDub to demux the MP3 from the original AVI and remux with the new AVI. Hope it syncs nicely! Thanx anyway for bringing up the ffdshow update! I will never realise the famous codec software has been revised and updated without the reminder!
