    hello,

I have searched to forum with no luck. I have read Praetor's thread on 'having codec issues? look here', tried deleting all codecs and installing only the necesary ones. now, i am able to play this avi file with wmp, but the video freezes often; the sound is fine. When i use Gspot to analyze the file it tells me that the 4CC is H264/x264 and that the codec is not installed. I tried searching the web but i'm not sure of which site is trustworthy. Further, although the sound is fine in wmp, Gspot tells me that the audio codec is "0x00ff: <unknown>". The avi file name has "H264.AAC" in the middle, so i'm assuming that AAC is the audio codec, but i dont have this as well. Any suggestions so i can remove the constant freezing of the video?

EDIT: I found this on the web
"I apologise if this i off topic but I have a movie encoded in h264/x264 I am unable to view it in full streaming, the video is in slow motion, I am on win98se and 312MB ram, anda 500mhz cpu, is there a program out there that can help me?

Program? No. Your computer is far too slow to view HD footage. I've got an Athlon 2600 with 512MB RAM and I can't even view HD footage at full speed."

    is this true?

    Thanks

h.264 is a standard and x264 is an implimentation of that standard. It is an encoder only to, you need libavcodec for decoding, so in terms of WMP that would be ffdshow. I wouldn't want to try decoding AVC with only 500MHz, should be possible, however it depends on the features used and resolution. mplayer or VLC should give you better playback.

AVC and aac in an avi container!!!!! Why??? If you know who encoded it please tell them to use mp4 or mkv as a container next time.

i do have FDDshow and have set the video decoding to 'libavcodec' for h264, but i still get video which freezes. my machine is a P3 866Mhz so this may be problem? I have tried VLC player and it does not show any video at all, only sound; atleast WMP shows video. About the container i dont know much, and i dont know who the encoder was. but only 3 of the files i have a avi container with h264 and ACC, the others are mkv files. I can try the mplayer to see if it works, but if i have the right codecs shouldn't it any player work? Also do i need to install an h264/x264 decoder? or is FDDShow enough? I have actually installed this decoder

but Gspot still tells me that i dont have the H264/x264 codec and it does not fix the problem. so i'm wondering if I even need it.

    Thanks

    hey NWD91,

I did as you suggested and tried playing the file using WMP, I saw teh following on the top left corner of the screen:

    current frame: 423
    CPU Load: 100%
    input size: 640x480
    output size: 640x480

so does this mean i need to upgrade cpu? :(

If you are hitting 100% and getting poor playback, then yes you need a new CPU since your current one can't decode real time. Like I said though mplayer or VLC should perform better, whether that is enough or not is a different matter.

You could convert to a different format (one that isn't so resource intensive) since it doesn't need to be done in real time.

My last P3 mplayer compile: http://ffdshow.faireal.net/mirror/mplayer/mplayer2005.11.23.P3.7z

It can use additional codecs, however it has built in AVC (libavcodec) decoding, built in aac decoding (faad2) and avi, mp4, mkv, etc. parsing.

It is a commandline app, however if you drag and drop a media file onto it, it will begin to play. "f" toggles fullscreen.
