Hi peeps, ok, I got a scorpio blue 320GB HDD for last xmas and it was working fine for a while. Then, one day i relised i didnt have the USB cable to plug it into the computer, luckily i had my nintendo ds futuretronics DS charger with a USB included! Thing is, i pluged it in using the USB and the wire got really warm, so something definetly went wrong, and nothing showed on the computer. Got it back home, plug it in with a high quality working usb cable and it says this device can perform faser on usb 2 bla bla, then if i run games off it, it will crash now and then it also sometimes gets errors during copying and just about allways completly locks up my computer until i unplug it. So i tool this small HDD out of its casing, because it was an external one and took out this sata and sata power to usb board thing and plugged it directly into my SATA 2. Computer now doesnt freeze, but sometimes i stil get error while running games or Delayed write fail popups. The thing that realy concerns me is that if i install an OS onto it and boot it, after about 20 mins or so ill here a little "Click!!" then everything will lock up and 5 secs after that i get the BSOD. Im not sure if its hardware or software. Unfortunatly im guessing its hardware... I did a low level format, didnt really help, i also ran HDD regenerator and didnt find any bad sectors at all. any help much appreciated tanks Also i know ive posted a thread before on this but this one has more details now so yea heh heh
Probably damaged the I/O Controller on the drive by using a bad cable. Back up the data and return the drive under warranty.
Shouldn't need to, WD can tell the drive is young enough for repair by the serial number, RMA it directly via the WD website.
Well, they might spot that if they're immediately obvious, but WD process too many drives to go checking for stuff like that. It is not their job or their responsibility to check people's drives for illegal content.
hmm it might now be worth the risk... i can still access the drive its just not... whats that word... i cant trust it. Can i permanently remove all data on it with some app so its un-recoverable?
Reliable? Ultimately without going to ridiculous lengths the drive will always have something of its former contents on there, but trust me, unless there's just a folder named Keygens sitting in the root directory, I wouldn't get yourself worked up too much over this.
Yes thats the word!! Ok, well i might try get it fixed under warrenty, or whatever they do... If you say the I/O could be damaged, is it possible that it just needs to be flashed? or an update would fix it? Thats if there are updates for HDD's. thanks sammorris
Generally I think incidents like that are a bit beyond updated firmware. Feel free to try it, but I've never done it myself.
