I'm looking around on ebay at hard drive enclosure kits. Do you just plug a normal hard drive into one of these and it becomes an external drive? Do they work well? Any problems with heat, cooling of the drive?

Cool. I have a Maxtor fireball drive that is skinnier than others. It's only about 1 inch or so. Would it work with this?

It doesn't matter what the size is, what matters is the pin configuration. As long as it is a normal 40pin IDE configuration, then you are fine. If it is a Laptop HDD, then they make enclosures for them as well.
