i installed a new hard drive in my laptop because my old one failed. i was able to install the software that came with the laptop, bt days later i started having problems. at first it was operating system not found. when i tried to reinstall the software it would tell me that the new har drive is not partitioned, i would hit yes do it and an error would occur. i would do this several times and nothing. i would try it again later and it would work. then i would have little problems. so i try to reboot, OPERATING SYSTEM NO FOUND. i would reinstall and i need to partition. ERROR. NO FIXED DISK. i need help. im going nuts!!!

wow, that would be a lot of things. first thing i would do is pull the hard drive from the lappy and see how stable it is with a desktop. you might not have that option, however.

are you using a windows install disc or some kind of restore discs to install stuff on the computer?

i am using recovery discs that came with the laptop which has windows ME and i have the windows XP update disc. i took the laptop back apart and made sure everything was properly connected and double-triple checked. it actually started to properly work, but i dont know how long will work for, hopefully for a long time. now checking it with a desktop, i dont know how to do that, kind of new to all of this. i just recently baught the HD bout 2 weeks ago.

are you trying to install ME on the laptop with the recovery discs, then do an upgrade, or have you found a way to verify the ME discs and go straight to the upgrade? (i really can't remember if you can even do that).

nevertheless, you can't use the recovery discs now; you've changed hardware settings, making those discs useless. you need a full version, a regular copy of windows, to go on.

considering it's a laptop and everything's integrated, i think it would work fine. as soon as you've loaded Win98, move on to XP with all your peripherals disconnected. you can get driver updates and whatnot after the upgrade.
