Ok, im fixing a friends desktop computer because it had a virus so i popped out the harddrive then i put it into my desktop at home as slave then i formatted it , got 100 percent, then installed Windows Xp Home Edition SP2, went through the whole setup, so now im at his house (on laptop) and i put the hard drive back in then start it up but it wont go past the blinking little white line at the top of the screen. Got any suggestions???
because you installed xp on it on your motherboard which most likely is not the same as his so xp barfed. re-install xp using his pc not yours. why did you take the drive out in the 1st place?
long story short, xp wouldnt install on his computer, when it got to the part where it showed the files being installed it would freeze at mostly all of them and say that it couldnt install do you wish to skip it, and it wouldnt let me format on his computer,... do you think if i format on my computer and installed xp on his computer that'll work??
i think you will still have problems if you format on yours & try to install on his. was the same xp disk used on yours that was attempted on his? try another rom drive as his might be dirty or flaky. take the ram out of his pc & use a pencil eraser on the gold contacts to remove the oxidation off them then reseat them. reseat the data cables on the motherboard, hd & rom drive.
Yea it was the same disk but that is a little too much for me, seeing if it was my home computer i might but i dont have time to do all that, im just going to try and format it on my computer and install on his, let you know how that'll go. Also if that doesnt work how can i get the computer to boot because as soon and i start the computer it stays at that screen i mentioned earlier? Because im just trying to get past that screen to format and install on his computer.
im certain its not the ram or the rom problem because when i load the bios its reads them so im guessing its just the hard drive , so man im verrrry confuseed lol is there any way i can format it via friends computer?? is there anyway??? lol
try another rom drive as could have a dirty laser lens but still show ok in bios & even in windows till you try to read a disk.
OK.. seen this before.. it often fails to copy files because they are already on the drive and flagged read only from the previous failed installs. I run active@killdisk on the first 10% of the drive which cures the problem 100% of the time if that is the case.. Other reasons for the xp installer going out are bad ram and a faulty IDE cable. the disk needs to be pretty torn up for it to fail.
sorry kind of a n00b what is active@killdisk ?? please can you explain with more detail? Someone told me that it might be that the motherboard has a virus because in bios it wont let me change the cd before the hard drive to even boot the cd, so he said take out the battery for the motherboard and wait 30 sec to a min and it'll factory restore the motherboard bios settings and then try to put the cd first then see if it boots, if it doesnt work then he said just try my ram on my computer on his and see if it works. NOTE: when i take out the hard drive to boot from cd only it reads the xp installer. It says checking your settings or something along those lines then it takes a loooong time then says file i386.biosinfo is missing or something like that ( cant tell you because im at home now not near his computer) What do you think this means??
what is the make & model# of the computer or motherboard? dealt it is a virus in the bios tho is possible.
