hard drive image restore

Hi Guys!

This weekend I'm planning on changing my son's laptop hard drive for a bigger one. My question is, if instead of backing up all the files, folders, etc., and then installing all software and files back again. Can I just make an image of the drive into an external USB drive, and then just restore that image into the new drive??

Nothing else would change in the laptop, just the hard drive.

Is it feasible what I'm planning to do??

If so, would symantec ghost do the trick, or would you suggest some other software??

That should work! I've used Ghost for years, and it works perfectly.
