I have a Wester Digital 160Gb drive that I installed about a year ago as the primary drive for my computer. After a year or so my computer started getting sluggish and unstable. It started restarting on its own. Finally I got a warning at startup that basically said "Drive 0 on the primary EIDE controller is operating outside of normal specifications." Everytime I started my computer I saw this, hit F1 to boot and then my computer would work for about 10 mins and shut down. My question is this. Is there any way to salvage this drive. I am using my backup drive now as my primary, and I have tried reformatting the drive with the XP disc. It formats the drive, reinstalls windows, but then upon boot up gives me the error again. Is my drive toast, or is there another option? Thanks.

download the wd diagnostic program to see what error code(s) there are.

Yeah, I did this and then called WD support line. They basically told me to throw it out. I just can't believe the HD dies after one year of use. I am switching to Seagate. Even if they aren't as high quality, at least they are cheap and if they break in a year I can easily replace it. WD sucks.

They said its just out of warranty. I made it clear how upset I was, but they didn't seem to care. So I will no longer buy WD.

Sorry for bringing up an old thread, but I thought I had to share this. I complained to WD about the drive over the phone and got nowhere. But before I gave up I wrote a long letter explaining how I felt and why I felt it was wrong. After a few exchanges over email, they have decided to replace the drive free of charge. Now I am not pleased with how they treated me initially, but hey, whatever. I will say that I am extremely happy they have stepped up and stand behind their product.

Either that or they just got sick of me.
