hard drive password

    hi was on the drink last night messing with my old laptop,
    put a password on HHD, now cant remember what i put on the damn
    thing , will i need to buy a new hard drive or can i just refresh windows
    with new install,if i have to get a new hhd will most sata hdd go into my laptop or does it have to be the same as old one
