Hey, I'm new. I just got a WEstern Digital 80GB hard drive, and everything went fine for a while, then all of a sudden it will be recognized, and then not, and then recognized, and then not, etc, ad infinitum. I can still transfer stuff, and it's never permanently crashed or anything, but it's annoying to play songs off of it cause suddenly everything stops. I can usually get it working again by just unplugging it and then plugging it back in after 5 minutes or so, or by restarting the computer. Still, if anyone has advice, i'd appreciate it, thanks.

Make sure the ribbon cable and power cable are firmly in place. If it keeps happening, plug a different power connector into the drive, if you have one free, or try a different ribbon cable.

If neither of those remedies work, you may have either a bad drive, or possibly a dying power supply.

    Edit: Damned keyboard. :)

Thanks, i'll look into that. It seems to be working when i plug it into my USB 1.1 port, but not the 2.0 port, even though the hard drive is formatted for both. Oh well, nothing serious is going wrong anymore, thanks for the help :)
