my parents pc has 4gig hard drive. win xp keeps saying only 150mb space and that we need to free up more space. when i look at the properties of drive c, it says 150mb free space, however when i open drive c and i select every folder in drive c and click properties, it only adds up to 2.6gig. i have made hidden folders visible too. how can this be?? if i am addin gup all folders in drive c and it is only coming to 2.6gig...then why is windows saying that drive c only has 150mb free? this makes no sense to me. please help.... thanks.
windows is using part of the drive as virtual. i would suggest getting a bigger hd for your system if it can handle it
hey..thanks. can we reduce the amount used for virtual?? not really keen to reload the whole system! i dont really know too much about the virtual space required etc. what is the least that we can set it to and still be ok. and how do we change this amount used?? thanks again.
right click on my computer and click on properties then click on the system restore tab and lower the amout of disk space it uses. system restore uses most of ur hdd
hey thanks for getting back to me....but now i am a bit lost. is system restore and virtual memory related?? does system restore also use virtual memory?? basically, i just want to know whats the minimum amount of MBs that i need to set for virtual memory and still be ok. same goes for system restore is this applies too. thanks again.
Adding up your folders should give you space used, not free. Am I missing something here? (Yes I did, 4 gigs in first line.) What does "c:\" properties say as to Used space and Free space? Do you use Norton AntiVirus as your virus protection program since this also has a way to not completely remove items when sent to the recycle bin?
4GB HDD running Windows XP... ARGGH Virtual Memory as a rule is 1.5 times the ammount of RAM you have in your PC Eg if you have 64mb ram, your virtual memory should be about 96mb if you have 128mb, your VM should be aboue 192mb etc You can check to see how much System restore is using by Right click on the My Computer icon on your desktop, then left click on Properties. Click on the System restore tab. there will be a slider there if you wish to increase or decrease I think the usual is about 10% of your total HDD is used I disable system restore on my pc, as i think its a waste of time, so on my 200GB hdd, it would use 23GB at Max (12%) As suggested earlier, which you right click on your C:\ then go to properties, in my Computer, what comes up as Capacity, Used Space and Free Space. CJC
hey. just wanted to thank you guys for your help. i really appreciate it. i have adjusted the virtual memory to 192mb as the pc has 128mb ram. it was originally set to 496mb. i also adjusted system restore from 10% to 5%...but now i might change this back since i freed up so much space with the virtual memory. anyway...thanks again.
