Ok, I have a pretty small hard drive (40 gigs). I really can't purchase a new one right now, so I need all the space I can get on this one. I only have 11 gigs free now, and i'm not sure why. I have about 8 gigs of music, but other than that, I really don't have to many things on it. I defrag, use the disk cleaner, and run a registry cleaner tool. is there a way to find out what's taking up all the space?
Do a search for video files, go through and see what your big folders are, empty the recycle bin, search for larger files.. Just a start.
download & run ccleaner from this link as have seen it clean out 1.5gig of crap. http://www.ccleaner.com/
try system mechanic 6 and do a major cleanup on your pc.delete any unwanted files.you can download it at any to torrent site.
I know you said you can't afford another one...but I'd just like to point out the power of ebay in this particular system. Several times in the last couple years i've picked up WD 160gb hdd's for under $60 shipped, new, from ebay. I know that's $60 that I certainly don't have now, lol, but it's worth saving up for. If you want some help with what to look for, drop me a line, my IM address is in my sig.
By chance, do you have Norton Ghost running? I seem to remember it causing some disappearing HD space issues in the past. Also Roxio "Go Back". http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/86733 View this thread & see if it helps. Some program may be storing back-ups on your main drive. TC
I have to say Neil, I used System Mech 6 and later I got some trouble or other. So I took it off. I am using Winxp Home btw. The CCleaner is a good idea, which I used myself.
