Hi my 2002 p4 started to make like a grinding noise when it loads about 10mnth ago its like a crrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr noise every time the harddrive ligt is on could someone tell me what this is or means and how or if i can stop the noise?
That'll be the hard disk working. Bear in mind as hard disks fill up, more platters are used and they get noisier. If the noise is unreasonably loud, then the hard disk is on the way out. Back up your data then bin the drive.
If you are seriously concerned about it, download a hdd giagnostic program for the hdd. Each manufacturer of hdds have their own diag. Hit up the web site for the maker of your drive, download, and run a scan. This should tellyou everything you need to know about the health of your drive. ~Rich
I had a hard drive do that, a pin had broken so i'd advise you to backup as fast as possible!!! Mine was more of a clicking though as the pin skipped...
Each incident is specific to the drive, but if the noise is loud you know you have a problem, get a S.M.A.R.T. based monitor to check how the drive is doing.
I checked it with s.m.a.r.t the results were segate 3204a,location primary/master,capacity 60gb,temp 30celcius,status ok is there any other programs to scan with or is this enough to say nothing is wrong?
Doesn't really tell you anything, most SMART apps give all sorts of info pertaining to the drive, access time, spin-up time, and also nearest failure time!
I wouldn't have thought so, it would still tell you more than that. (Your sig is still too large by the way, 67K on my count at the moment, you want it under 50k).
i jst got some warning went in and found the other info part that u were saying b4 ECC on the fly count says threshhold 0,value 82,worst 64 and were its meant to say ok if it is so it has an arrow pointing up 1
my sig is 53k by the way i dont see what is the point of this rule even if a person had 150k its not like its gona take minutes to load even with 28.8kbps dial up it would take 14 sec for 150k in the browser not downloading
It is now 53k. I'm not police but these rules are laid down so people stick to them, if everybody says "it's not much over" there's not much point in having the rule. it's more acceptable now than the 150k it used to be. Poor 28k dialup folks need a full 15 seconds [bold]Just to load YOUR signiature[/bold] let alone anything else on the page, and that's when it's about the legal size. You could easily lose the internet explorer user bar, that's not something I'd want to advertise!
now can u help me ill fix my sig in the next 36hours when i get time but can u tell me what that warning i got was?
A fluctuation by that much coupled with you say a grinding noise tends to suggest the drive is on the way out. How loud is the noise?
hard to say , if im doing a app that needs more loading the sound tends to be ok but a bit loud like medium not that loud not soft either but sometimes or always it gets really annoying ,what does that warning exactly mean. does it mean something is gonna die or its nothing to worry about?
I'm not sure what the value means, but it shouldn't be changing that much. Most SMART data numbers occasionally change by 1. A change of 18 is huge, and suggests the drive may be triggering errors when reading data.
Thanks dsgtrain, much appreciated. I can't say exactly how long dazila, but let's just say it won't be that long. It could be 2 months, it could be 2 hours. I'd say start backing up!
Does it make worse that its been doing its being making the sound for a year or does that mean that nothnig could be wrong cause its lasting that long after the noise? and would you know anyone on this forum that knows what could that warning mean? Thank you for your previous replies
