So lately I've been having some harddrive problems. Sometimes it gets fixed, but this last time I haven't been able to fix it.

Anyways I have a Maxtor 40 GB harddrive, and when I turn it on I get this error screen.

    1024MB Ok
    USB Device(s): 1 Mouse
Auto-detecting Pri Master... IDE Hard Disk
Auto-detecting Pri Slave... IDE Hard Disk
    Auto-detecting Sec Master... Atapi Cd-Rom
    Auto-detecting Sec Slave... Atapi Cd-Rom

    PRI Master: Samsung Sp1604n Tm100-24
Ultra DMA Mode-5 S.M.A.R.T Capable and Status - Ok
    Pri Slave: MCPVOS 5d343h3 ! "SC#SSS" # " Dch3.7s2
    S.M.A.R.T. Capable but command failed
(Some stuff about the DVD/CD drives)

    Primary Slave Hard Disc Error
    Press F1 to Resume

Anyways this has happened before, and I fixed it by unplugging the drive and letting it sit for a while. Then when I plugged it back in it worked. I've already tried to change the jumper settings, but either I get this error or the computer doesn't detect it at all.

Outside of taking it to a store to get it fixed, what can I do?

That drive is toast. I have had WAY too many 40 gig Maxtors die on me in the last 3 years. At last count it was 6. Anyway, if you can get the thing to boot, back up all your important data from your Maxtor onto the Primary drive. Pull the drive and junk it. Pick up a new WD, set it as slave and plug it in and you should be good to go.

Nope no booting, this sucks I had a lot of pictures on that things too.

Anyway to bring it to a computer store and have them pull the data out of it?

I already have other hard drives it's just this on was the one I saved my pictures on (I pulled it outta my old comp and I didn't wanna junk it)

    Thanks for the help
