My little brother has been complaining about being unable to connect to the internet. So I checked his computer and found something called gamevance32.exe.

I looked it up and it says that this is a key logger/virus. After reformatting his computer his internet works again, I think it was somehow hogging bandwidth.

I'm just curious what this thing could have been using the bandwidth for and whether anybody thinks I should alarm my parents, possible even try to convince them to freeze their bank card and get a new one since I don't know how long this thing has been sitting on his computer.

    None of my research say’s that it’s a keylogger….

It’s used to allow users to play games on-line.

Maybe your AV found it as a FP (false positive)

The re-format may not have been necessary..

Although, It could have been something else on there and the reformat took care of that.. You should be in good shape now.

    Hi 2sweet4u

Here's your security lesson for today: tell your brother that just because it is related to games, you should download and install it.

Gamevance (which is a gaming network), was probably what your brother installed, and is also known to be a rogue gaming program, which means that it is connected to malware. The bandwidth being used could have been gamevance32.exe (part of Gamevance) connecting back to home to report the latest information which has been gained by Gamevance from spying on your computer.

Always research anything before you install it. That is one of the most important parts to computer security.

If you're worried about how long the file has been on the computer, just ask your brother how long it has been since he installed Gamevance. That would be it.

    Best Regards :D

    2sweet4u,

Since you have already reformatted/reinstalled your OS…. These are just “after the fact” comments.

If you are using a 3rd party firewall, you may have lost the internet connection due to a M$ Update.

Installation of Microsoft Update KB951748 may result in loss of Internet connectivity.

Click here for more information on how to resolve this issue.

GameVance is NOT a virus, malware, keylogger or Trojan, it’s Adware and says so in the EULA.

There are methods to stop the Pop-Ups but that will sometimes disable the program….

As I said, you are probably OK Now!
