** I posted this under a different title earlier and got told off so ill try again... ** Hey everybody. Im having a bit of a problem a the moment, wondering if anybody could help. I used to be able to play DVD's fine in my DVD player on my laptop, though lately - I bought and installed the latest version of Nero to burn a load of DVD's Ive been meaning to do for ages. I installed the program, and things were running fine, though yesterday for the first time I got round to burning a DVD, and now I have - whenever I put a DVD in my drive to play - the picture and sound just continually skip. Ive tried playing in several programs - Windows Media Player, Nero, PowerDVD - but to no avail. The only thing I have done different than normal, is burn a DVD in the mean time. My laptop is only 2 months old -surely the drive hasnt broke after one burn?! The only thing I can think of - is when i burnt my DVD yesterday - i set it to burn in long play, so i could fit more on the disk. I tried it out on my laptop after it was burnt to see if it worked - and it worked fine. Now though, this problem with the skipping sound and picture - just wondering if its maybe trying to play these in long play?! Is that a stupid thing to say?! I really have no idea whats wrong though!? Any help would be great! Thanks a lot! **Update - since this post - ive figured it may have something to do with my read speed maybe? I swear before it used to beable to read at 8x, but now seems to be set at 6x and I cant change it...any ideas on this aswell?! Cheers!** Paul.
PaulKaleb, It could possibly be the media you are using. Most members here recommend Taiyo Yudens and Verbatims. Try those media and see if that fix your problem. It could also be your burning speed. Try and reduce your speed to 4x-8x.
hey, thanks for the suggestion, though....I dont know what you mean by the 'type' of media. Also, I dont understand how my burn speed effects my read speed? I burned this dvd yesterday, which worked ok on my laptop, and also on the dvd player - but last night as i went to settle down with another DVD which has always worked fine in my laptop - it just jumpped and stuttered. I tried several other DVD's Ive watched on my laptop before - and they are the same. Media files on my computer such as avi's and mpeg's work fine still however?! Paul.
The media I am referring to are dvd disc. Use good quality such as Verbatims and Taiyo Yuden dvd disc to burn your movies.
Oh right - I get u!! *feels stupid!!* haha! I just checked my disc, they are Verbatim 4.7Gb disks. Im currently running the Nero CD-DVD speed software - hoping it will do something - its taking AGES tho!
I use 'recommended' Taiyo Yuden in a 'recommended' LG GSA-H10N and they burn perfectly, play everywhere, but when first inserted in the LG are frequently not detected the first time. Do the disks that previouly played perfectly still do so? If not, the problem is the PC: either the player is failing, or the software has become corrupted. The DVD player reads the disk info to see how fast it will burn, or increases read speed until errors occur. Long Play does not put more data on the disk: it diminishes the quality of the video to lower the amount to match disk size (4.7G). The drive could have failed, but the quick answer is always re-format and re-install/update ALL software. If the laptop is only 2 months old, it is still under warranty: have it checked. Did you go on the net and get a trojan/virus/spyware that is burning up CPU cycles? Did you down-load a 'handy' tool-bar/add-on, etc.
I just bought a new NEC DVD burner and I'm using Ridata 16x DVD+R disks. My usual process is, after burning a DVD, I try copying it back to a temporary folder and write down the speed it was able to copy the data back. The read data rate gives me an idea of how well the the DVD was written. I noticed that after burning a DVD with Nero, they were only reading back at ~4.6 Mbps. I also noticed that if I rebooted XP after using Nero and then tried to read the same DVD back, the read speed jumped dramatically to ~14.6 Mbps :-o It seems that Nero must be changing something which causes the reading ability to slow down? I also tried shutting down all processes after having used Nero and it would still read slow. The only way I could get it to read fast again was by rebooting XP. You aren't going crazy, I'm trying to figure out how to fix it too.
I found this program for testing DVD read speed and it seems to correct the read speed problem being caused by Nero. http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/Nero_CDDVD_Speed/993604508/1 If I run the "Scan Disk" tab then I don't have to reboot XP to get ~14.5 Mbps read rate back. All I need to do is startup the "Scan Disk" then abort it and the read speed problem goes away.
