i have yet to buy one but i've heard a lot of people say that the hinge breaks easily. how long is the warrenty and will nintendo replace if under warrenty for free. i sure if u are extra careful it won't break but i'm not sure of that. **simply even if u are super careful will the hinge break**

Mine has not broken, neither has my brothers nor anyone elses that I know of.

Mine was purchased within a week of the release of the Lite (in the UK) and gets used almost daily.

it happens to i would say 1/10 people** just my guesstimate

**these results are based only on personal on opinion not any scientific data or research and should not be taken seriously

the ds lites hinge does start to crack, but ive only seen that problem on the white ones.

and me and my cousin were really careful with our ds's and both our hinges cracked, and we both had white ones.

I do have a white DS. But still my hinge broke after my little cousins dropped billions of times on a hardwood floor. There would be less of a chance if you ever dropped on a carpet but never ever drop it. It to cost me 50 dollars under warranty. Also the the Left button on your DS has also has a great chance of breaking. It happened to me and 2 of my cousins. And we all have different color ds's. Mine's white, one of there's is red with black on the bottom, and the other one's all black. Mine got fixed with the 50 dollar warranty but my cousin bargained a little and he got it done for free under his free warranty.

I've had the cracked hinge problem twice now. It's not an issue of how well you take care of your DS; I'm very careful with mine, and although I use it often it almost never leaves my apartment. It seems as if the act of opening and closing the DS itself is enough to put a small amount of stress on the hinge. The first time I had the issue, it degerenated to the point where the system's top half would no longer support itself in the "open" position.

This happened to me exactly one day after Nintendo's one-year warranty expired, and I called them about it a couple days after that. Because I was technically out of warranty they did charge me for repairs, but because it was so close they only charged me half.

When I received my repaired DS, it included a note saying that my system would be covered for an additional year from the date of repair. As irritating as it is to have this problem with the hinges, Nintendo does an acceptable job with their customer service in regards to the issue.

I have rebuilt several DS Lites with broken hinges. When I sell/give them away I include a crystal case with each one.

I have had none of them come back or had any reports of broken hinges nad I know that they have been dropped once or twice.

The hinge shouldn't crack under normal use.

on the white ds lites it does crack from just opening and closing the screen.

of course, not immediately, but over time it will crack through the hinge completely.

people say that just opening and closing it creats a stress point on the hinge. is their any way to prevent it from doing it like bracing the right hinge as u open it

    i dont think so.

well, if you have the white ds lite, id say its going to crack sometime.

but if you have a different color, then you should be fine.

Ok it does happen most to the white ds but I believe thats just a coincidence besides after I had it fixed once went nearly a year without having it to break again. So it does get fixed the first time sending it for repair. Besides if you have a game like Metroid Prime Hunters one of the top L or R button is likely to break. Happened to all or my cousins that had the game and me. Also we all had different color ds's and my hinge cracked from dropping it on hardwood floor like a dozen times (My little cousins).

nah, i wouldnt think that using the l and r buttons a lot will cause the hinge to break.

and about your colored ds hinges breaking, its because they fell.
i was talking about how they wont break under normal use.
of course dropping the ds multiple times will cause it to break.

I think he was trying to say that excessive use of L and R can cause those buttons to break, not the hinge. Issues with the L and R triggers failing are actually a somewhat common problem with the DS Lite, but it's not caused by overusing those buttons unless you're really smashing them every time you hit them. Dropping the DS is the only cause I've ever heard for that problem.

As far as I know, there was never any issue with the hinges on the original DS; the problem is exclusive to the DS Lite.

Tangentially, aside from the improved screen and stylus, I personally prefer the grip of the controls on the original DS to the Lite.

ok my advise is this:buy those protecive cases and thos cords tha you put in your ds and pulse and

ps: i have the original ds it fell about two times and it still works^^
but buy the ds lite because there is almost no accessories forthe original one
