i have downloaded all the updated codecs for my media player(s), but every time i try and open the file all i get is a black screen. there is audio, and everything checks out ok under the system panel, and re-installs and additions of codec packs dont seem to do anything. does anyone have any advice?

    thanks in advance

If you just get a black screen and no audio and the counter is counting, then it is probably because your file only contains black and silent audio. Try mplayer or VLC or compress with say winrar. Blank video/silent audio compresses very, very well.

I thought that too, but it will work on other computers. For some reason my laptop won't display the video, but my desktop will.
