Having a size problem

I tried searching for this but I didn't have any luck.

I keep converting avi with xvid2dvd and then burn with shrink/nero. The burning goes fine, but when I play, the picture is too big and some gets cut off.. I'm sure most of you know what I'm talking about.

Is my aspect ratio too big? I think I have it set at 16:9, would 4:3 do the trick?

    Thanks

well this is not a shrink problem, it is more of a conversion problem, it would be better asked in the avi2dvd forum, you would get better results in that forum, have you tryed changing your setings, and burning again? that is what i would do! good luck happy burning have a nice day

If you have a regular TV, then 4:3.
If you have a widescreen TV then 16:9 is appropriate.

Some of picture will always get cut-off from what you see on your PC as opposed to your TV, it's called over scan. You'll typically lose 5-15% around the edges. This a big problem with fan hard coded subbed Anime as those doing the subs have not taken into consideration the 'Safe Area' when burning in the subs.

Use ConvertXtoDVD....it's not free......when you load an AVI and click on it, the right hand window will tell you what the aspect ratio is. Anything 1.777 and up should be converted to 16:9 ratio. (Change that in the options) You do run into AVIs that have more extreme ratios but still convert them the same at 16:9. This program works great on 99% of the AVI out there. It will also comvert PAL to NTSC AVIs.

Since you have Nero you can simply use Nero Vision to convert AVI to DVD. Nero Vision can change to either format 4:3 (Full) or 16:9 (Wide) easily to your desire.

Another thing to look out is the settings via your DVD player and TV. So if it's 16:9, make sure both DVD player & TV are set to 16:9 as well (to better display the aspect ratio).

    Best of luck!!

Okay I switched to 4:3 and burned again. The size is good now but the picture skips every second or so. Kind of like it has the jitters. Any ideas? It does the same with two other files I converted.

Is 'xvid2dvd' the name of the app you use for converting?
I am not familiar with it.
If you are converting the avi and saving the output as a (vob)file on the PC before burning, does the saved file play on the PC without problems?
Is it only after burning that the problem shows up?

It's on the PC too. I donno what it could be. The name of the program is convertx2dvd, not what I had said before.

I have used convertx2dvd with good results.
Often when I look at the results on the PC using DVD Shrink, there is a certain jerkiness, but it is not apparent when burned to DVD.
As 'Alkohol' suggests, importing the AVI into Nero Vision Express (Nero 6) or Nero Vision (Nero 7) might improve the output.

Unfortunaely NVE2 and 3 usually produce audio sync problems for me when the Xvid has an mp3 VBR audio stream (which is usually the case), while ConvertX does not.
